- Buffy, there's a letter for you.
- Ok, mom.
Buffy Anne Summers ran downstairs to get her letter. It wasn't often she got post, so it was always exiting when she got something. Mostly she only had the toy catalogue and such to look at, but today she had gotten a letter. Who could it be from? She tore the letter out of her mother, Joyce's hands and seated herself at the breakfast table. First then did she notice the weirdness of it. First of all there was no stamp. How could a letter get there and have no stamp? Weird! Maybe someone had gone by her house and put it in her letter box. It was definitely for her. It had her name and address on it, it even stated out which room was hers. There was no doubt.
Her five-year-old sister, Dawn couldn't help, but be a pain. She wanted to see the letter too. It didn't matter that she couldn't read and that letters where personal. Buffy had to shove her away from her, using force and it made her parents angry, as Dawn had hit the wall hard and started to cry. For some reason she was strong, very strong. She was in fact to strong to just be eleven, although for her eleven was big. She had been born that way, but her sister hadn't. Noone could explain it. They had been to several doctors to find it out, but they all said she was a perfectly, healthy girl, who for some reason also was very strong. They had told Buffy that her strength was a gift, but she had to be careful with it, not to use it on anyone that didn't deserve it, in fact, not to use it on anyone at all. Normally, Buffy would pout on how Dawn had deserved it, but she forgot to pout as she studied the letter more closely. There was a strange crest with four animals on it. One was unmistakably a lion. There was a snake, no doubt in that, there was a bird, looked a little like a raven, but she wasn't sure. Then the fourth animal, well it had been placed as the third. That one wasn't easy to spot, maybe it was a weird bear or something. It carried the letters luna, what was luna? She opened the envelope and unfolded the pieced of paper, what a weird type of paper, her parents looked at it and said it was parchment. Anyway, she unfolded it and for some reason read it out loud.
"Dear Ms. Summers,
We congratulate you in being accepted at Luna academy of magical arts. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment. Term begins on 1 September. We await your owl by no later than 31 July.
Yours sincerely,
Jennifer Calendar,
headmistress."
- Mom, what does this all mean?
- Um, honey, can I look at that letter.
Buffy gave it to her straight away. She could hear the 'Hm's and the 'What the's. But while her mother looked at it, she looked at the other piece of parchment.
…Uniform… work robes, pointed hat, protective gloves (dragon hide!?!)… Books… Standard book of spells grade 1, A history of magic, Magical theory, A beginners guide to transfiguration, One thousand magical herbs, Magical drafts, Fantastic beasts and where to find them, The dark forces: a guide to self-protection… Other equipment… wand, cauldron, phials, telescope, scales… pet… an owl, cat or a toad… Not allowed to bring her own broom (Why would she want to bring a… broom!?!)…
She handed the other piece of parchment to her mother and then found one more piece, which also there was written something on.
"Muggleborn witch and wizard guide, a quick explanation of our world.
Part one - Short wizarding dictionary (alphabetically):
Galleon - Golden wizard coin (Most value)
Gringotts - Wizard bank, run by goblins (known to be one of the safest places in the world)
Knutt - Bronze wizard coin (29 knutts in a sickle)
Ministry of magic - Works to keep the wizarding world secret for muggles (divided into several departments, the highest political position is Minister of magic)
Muggle - Non magic people (approximately 5,9 billions population in the world)
Muggleborn witch/wizard - Magical person born in non-magic families (Very common phenomena)
Quidditch - Wizarding sport played on broomsticks, seven players on each teams (Longest game played lasted 3 months)
Sickle - Silver wizard coin (13 Sickles in a galleon)
Squib - Oposite of Muggleborn witch/wizard. Non-magic person born in wizarding families (Very rare phenomena)
Wizard post - Letters from wizard to wizard are sent by birds (Most common, owls)
Part two - The school and school supplies:
Answering the letter - The letter has been sent by an owl which remains outside the house until it has gotten your letter confirming that you have in fact received your acceptance letter. Open either door or window and let the owl in or take the responding letter outside to tie onto the owls foot. The owl will return to the school, carrying your reply.
Getting the school supplies - The wizarding shops are hidden from the muggle eye. You will need to locate "The bent twig", a wizard shelter, which is located between the book shop and pharmacy on main street in Los Angeles. Next to the check-in counter there are three mirrors. Go to the middle one and place both hands on the mirror, wait five seconds before entering. You will reach a long street with nothing, but wizard shops. Exchange muggle money with wizard money at Gringotts, the wizard bank (5 dollars in a galleon)
Getting to the school - The train for Luna will leave from the Grand Stevenson train station at 11 o'clock on 1 September from platform 2 ½. The platform is hidden from muggle sighting. You need to go between platform 2 and 3 and to the mailbox between the two. Keep one hand on your trolley with supplies and place the other on the mailbox door. In a couple of seconds you will be standing at platform 2 ½.
Part three - The school system:
The school is divided into 4 houses, which are like families within the school. At the opening feast new students will be sorted into the different houses, which are Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. Each thing you do affects your house. Every credit you get earns points for your house and every rule-breaking looses points from your house. The house with most points wins the house cup, which is the biggest honor you can get. Each student is to sleep in the house dormitory and spend their time off in their house common rooms.
Each house has a house Quidditch team (First years are never to play on their team as their first year will be spent teaching them to fly. Grade 2 to 7 are welcome to try out for their team.) The four houses competes for the Quidditch cup, which is given to the team with most points.
Punishments for rule breaking or rudeness are points taken from the students house. In worse cases there are also to be given out detention, which is the student having to do some kind of work at the school.
To go on to a new grade you have to pass the end of the year exams. In the fifth year and seventh year there are bigger exams to be taken. In the fifth year every student has to take O.W.L.'s (Ordinary Wizard Levels) and in seventh year the students may take N.E.W.T.'s (Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests), which is necessary to get career in for example the Ministry of Magic.
First and second grade students have standard classes and in the third year the students also take upon themselves to add new subjects to their curriculum."
Buffy looked amazed on the piece of parchment. If this was a joke, it was really well done. Someone had quite an imagination. She was a little curious though and did as the letter said and opened the kitchen window. No sooner she had done that stood a owl on the kitchen table next to the marmalade and cheese. It had a spare piece of parchment tied to it's leg. She took a pen and wrote.
"I, Buffy Anne Summers got the letter"
Before she had put the pen down she saw the owl sticking out it's leg, making it easier for her to tie it onto the leg. Then the owl hooted and flew back out the window and Buffy saw it turning south.
- Wow, she muttered.
Her parents didn't know what to say. They just looked stupidly out the window as though they waited for it to return, but it didn't. Buffy went the whole day believing that at some point someone would call her and say; "haha, we tricked you bad", but noone did. The next morning still noone had revealed it as a joke. She went down and for some reason she opened the kitchen window. Within five minutes the same owl had returned and dropped a letter onto her lap, her lap... noone else's.
"Ms. Summers. Your ticket's enclosed."
Buffy looked at the strange train ticket the letter "platform 2 ½" was on it, so was the station name and the time. It looked like a authentic ticket as well. She looked at her parents which both hurried to look at the previous days letter. They muttered things to each other, that Buffy couldn't hear and she could see them look slightly worried. Then they got up, while Buffy was still sitting.
- What's wrong, Buffy asked.
- We're not sure. This all seems like some kind of a joke, so we have no choice than to get to main street and see for ourselves. Hank, should we ask your mom or mine to watch Dawn?
- You can ask your mom, I think my parents are expecting company or something today. They mentioned something.
And two hours later they were standing outside "The bent twig". It was indeed a place. Her parents muttered something on how they had walked by so many times and never noticing this place. Inside they found like a whole new world. A man in a cloak was standing behind the counter and some other persons in cloaks was sitting reading newspapers with pictures that moved. Buffy looked at it all with big eyes. The man behind the counter laughed.
- Ah, muggles. You're here to get to Strapford alley, huh?
- Um, what's Strapford alley, Buffy asked in a slight whisper.
- Step into the mirror and you'll see, the man responded.
Buffy felt silly as she walked towards the middle mirror and placed both hands on the mirror. She turned her head and looked at the man.
- Go on, he said, encouraging. - Must be a little scary the first time, but you'll get used to it. You'll love Luna, all the stuff you're going to learn. Graduated from there myself, mind you, I didn't have that great grades. I advice you to study or else you won't get to use what you've learned. Ok?
Buffy nodded towards him, then she turned back to the mirror and lifted her foot and moved it towards the mirror. She waited to feel the solid wall stopping it, but there came nothing. Her foot was inside the mirror, she could now only see her leg from the knee and up. She moved closer and more of her foot disappeared and before she knew it she was at the beginning of a long street with a lot of strange shops. A minute later, her parents had joined her. Both gaping at it all.
- So, I guess we have a witch in the family then, huh, Joyce muttered, looking at Buffy.
The three of them walked down the street where they could see lots and lots of people in cloaks buying things Buffy hadn't imagined existed. Dragon liver was on the menu at one of the dining places. There were book stores, pet shops with the most unusual pets, a wand shop and lots of other treats. She wanted to look in every one of the shops, but her parents told her they had to exchange money first at the bank. Then finally they found it. Gringotts didn't look that big, but when they entered they could see it was bigger. Was every house like that? They had no idea. Some weird-looking creatures was behind the counters. Buffy remembered the letter saying something about Gringotts being run by goblins. Her parents exchanged quite a lot of money into Galleons, Sickles and Knutts, as they had no idea how much the school supplies would cost.
An hour later, Buffy had her new books, the cauldron and gloves and such things. She had gotten the clothes. There were two things left and those two were something she had been looking forward to. One was the wand and the other was a pet. Her parents had found out that everything wasn't as expensive as they had thought and since they would save a lot of money on regular school money and food and such they had decided that she was going to get a pet plus get some pocket money in case there were shops or something near the school.
"Wood Wands" was the name of the shop. Buffy had to laugh at the silly name, but stilled as they entered the shop, which was creepy-looking. An elderly man came out and looked at her.
- Ah, a new face, your name, please.
- Um, Buffy… Buffy Summers, Buffy said feeling she had to say the whole name for some reason.
- Ms. Summers, the man said bowing his head in a greeting. - You're here to get your first wand, yes?
- Um, yeah.
- Can you tell me which is your wand hand?
Buffy looked strangely at him.
- Ok, which hand do you use for writing?
Buffy reached out her right arm, which he measured and went to all the boxes behind him. He picked one out.
- Here's a nice one, maple and phoenix feather. Try and give it a wave.
- Why, Buffy asked.
- It's the wand who chooses the witch. Not every wand fits you and your personality. If nothing happens the wand is not meant for you, but if something happens then we've got a match.
- Um… ok, Buffy said, feeling stupid as she waved.
Nothing happened. The man took it back and looked through his boxes again and picked out a new one.
- Maybe you're more of a dragon person. Try this one, willow and dragon heartstring.
Buffy didn't wait for him to ask her to wave, she just did. She felt sparks coming out of it and surrounding her.
- Wonderful, wonderful, the man exclaimed and placed the wand into the box, handing it to her.
Buffy turned to look at her parents and for the first time, since the letter arrived, her mother was beaming with pride. They paid and left the store and went straight for the pet shops. Buffy wanted to look at all the pets before she chose one. She was utterly amazed at how many pets there were. A pool of toads was in front of her, which made her think 'definitely not a toad'. The snakes scared her and made her hurry past their cages. She didn't want rats either. The cats were tempting, especially a cute black one. The owls were cool, but then she saw this very weird looking bird, she hadn't seen before. The letters below read "Phoenix" and below every fact about phoenix was listed even the fact that their tears had healing powers. She looked over her shoulder at her parents. The price was quite high for their liking, but they read the whole text about a phoenix and when they found out it had healing powers they agreed to buy it, but they also told her there would be less money left for her to spend at the school. Buffy somewhat didn't care and was just happy that was getting such a special pet. With it she also got a book on more phoenix facts and how to take care of them.
Shortly said, Buffy was a very happy girl, when they returned home with all of the supplies. She had never liked school, but there was something different about this one. She was to learn magic, magic, which she hadn't had a clue existed. The phoenix sometimes sang to her and its song was so beautiful and sometimes caused her parents walking in just to hear it. Dawn was still being a pain, but somehow, that didn't bother Buffy anymore. She was exited about fall. And couldn't wait to find out what would happen next.
