A Special Message From Gary, Laura and Mason
We were elated and scared to death simultaneously when we learned that I was pregnant with Bryson. Five and a half years previously, Bryson’s older brother, Mason, had arrived after a very difficult pregnancy. I had been bed-ridden in the hospital for ten weeks on I.V. medication and other drugs to try to control my pre-term labor. Mason arrived seven weeks premature by emergency cesarean section. He was small but perfect! I, on the other hand, had lost nearly ten pounds because my muscles atrophied from prolonged bed rest. I had to learn how to walk again and I had no energy and a new baby to care for!
The doctors had given us a fifty/fifty chance of experiencing the same complications with a second pregnancy. We decided to place our trust in God and he blessed us with a second pregnancy. Mason was five when we told him that he might have a new little brother or sister. He was so excited. He knew what I had been through to have him and he always thought that he was destined to be an only child. Sixteen weeks into my pregnancy with Bryson, I started on home bedrest. Twenty-eight weeks into my pregnancy, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I began giving myself four insulin injections a day and had to adhere to a strict diet for the remainder of my pregnancy. Bryson arrived four weeks early and the day after he arrived was the happiest, most contented day of my life as I cradled my perfect newborn son in my arms on a beautiful fall day.
In spite of the fact that at age two, our precious son was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes and had to receive three shots a day himself, he was perfect. He was brave. His diabetes never slowed him down and he never complained about his shots. He was expressive as you can see from his pictures and a true leader amongst his peers. Bryson and Mason were best friends in spite of the fact that there was a five and a half year age difference. They adored each other, shared rooms, shared baths and shared all of their play time. Bryson truly had a zest for life. He enjoyed everything. He loved to play with all of his toys and enjoyed any outdoor activity - bike riding, roller blading, going to the park, horseback riding, snow skiing, fishing, playing ball. He packed more fun and play time into nearly four years than most people do in a lifetime!
Tragically, our precious and perfect son was taken from us in a horrifying accident at the home of a friend. His tragic death has affected our whole community and beyond.
It is our expressed wish to our family, friends and others who have been touched by Bryson’s life and death that as a concerned community, we should unite together and find some good in his death. God would want us to do so! In remembrance of Bryson, we have established the Bryson Asher McBee Memorial Fund at St. Cecilia Catholic School. Our wish is to create an endowment for scholarship, charitable donations (especially the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation) and especially a foundation created in Bryson’s memory to assist families like ourselves who have lost a child. There are not many resources available anywhere, specifically for families like ours. In fact, in this city of four million people (Houston, TX), there is only one organization that assists bereaved families and Mason has been placed on a waiting list for at least two months before he can be accepted into the program! Through the Bryson Asher McBee Memorial Fund, we want to reach the many people and families like ours that need helpful resources. Please help us make that a reality.
If you care to make a tax deductible donation so that we can make this dream become a reality. Please send your contributions to the following address:
Account: Bryson Asher McBee Memorial Fund
Any donations over $250.00 will receive a tax deductible notification per the IRS laws. If under $250.00, no deductible notification is necessary. However, you will receive a confirmation of your contribution by mail.
It has been brought to our attention that many corporations will match any personal donations.
We can assure you that every cent of the money contributed will be put to good use, to help others and to do good works in God’s name. If you can not make a contribution, please remember our family in your daily prayers.
With Our Sincere Thanks,
Gary Laura and Mason McBee
