MAKING YOUR
CHARACTER:
Come up with a
concept, even if it's a rather simple one. 'Barnthar is
a rugged hill barbarian from the Eastern steps of Turan' is
a good start. Come up with some background, goals, driving
concepts, but do leave gaps for development and tweaking later
on. You should have a concept in mind BEFORE you ever pick up
dice. Make sure you read all the material on Thulsa's site so
you know what is appropriate for Hyboria...I don't want to see
submissions for Death Knights of Takisis.
Choose your race. You
can only play humans in the Hyborian Age campaign –
elves, dwarves, halflings and other non-humans are not
appropriate to the feel of Howard's novels, at least, not as
player characters. Thulsa's d20 site has lots of human races to
choose from, so you can be quite varied – a
sallow-skinned Khitite, or a dusky Zingaran, ebon-hued
Zambabweien or red-haired Vanir.
Determine
your stats. Stats are determined by rolling 4d6 seven
times, dropping the lowest die from each roll. Drop the lowest
of the seven rolls, take the highest six and assign to your
stats as you like. You must use the die roller at Irony Games
(see sidebar above for link). The roller will send me the
results – make sure to put my email address into the
appropriate field (use gmredux@yahoo.com).
If I don't get the results, they are not valid – you will
have to re-roll, so make sure you put my email address in! If
you get really bad results (ie, your average stat is less than
12) we will allow a re-roll.
Please note, that the
Racial stat modifiers for the humans can bring your attributes
to higher than 18. This is permissable.
Determine your
alignment and class. You probably already have this in mind
at this point. We are using alignments. Your characters should
be heroic, even if it's not readily apparent, so no evil
characters, please. Allowable character classes are listed
under the Character Classes section.
You should make your
character at 3rd level of experience – you
are considered to have been seasoned by a few adventures,
perilous journeys or what-have-you. You may be lower level if
you like, if it fits your concept, however. You get max HP for
1st level, and a set number of HP (plus Con bonus)
every level after that, based off of your HD type. Please see
Character Classes for more information.
The rest of character
generation is very much like the PHB – please note
that depending on where your character is from, your choice of
equipment and arms and feats may be affected. Most of this
information is provided here in the Rules section, and if
elsewhere, you will be directed where to find it. Note: Humans
still get a bonus feat and bonus skill points, even though
non-humans are not available for play n the game.
Money: Described
under the Equipment section. Your characters will have few
funds when they begin, so do not use the DMG's guide for cash
for high level characters.
Name. Always
important, make them reasonable and appropriate for the genre –
see the Races page for a list of names by region and the naming
flavour (ie, Celtic, Latin, Mongolian, Chinese, etc).
Send me the character
submission by email as in-line text. Don't send
attachments. First come first served is NOT the rule – I
will accept all applications – then I'll select the best.
You may submit more than one character if you wish, so you can
compete for say, the sorceror spot and a barbarian spot. Please
NOTE: if you send me a character and you are not yet signed
up for the mailing list I will return it to you until you are
subscribed. If you have any questions, please let me know
immediately and I'll do my best to help.
