Summary

Billy is a television writer. He is funny and talented but, he works too slow for the medium which requires quick turnaround. So, most of the time he sits at his typewriter watching old sitcom re-runs. One day, he is given a great opportunity writing for a popular sitcom, all he would have to do is turn in a full length treatment the following day. This would take him weeks. He tries but fails. While trying to call the sitcom producer to cancel the appointment he notices a fully typed script. He looks it over and knows it is a hit. But who did it? He turns in the script and lands the job. That night he discovers his ghost writer to be his house plant. Requiring a lot of sunlight, 'Lucy' as he names it, grew from the glow of his black and white television, on 24 hours a day. all is well until Billy tries to have a party with some 'undesirables.' He places the plant on a window sill where a cat knocks it off to shatter in an alley. Billy gives Lucy a burial and even visits her often. On one of these visits he says he must try to move on. Suddenly, one of Lucy's leaves comes out of the ground... and then another... and then another, from all around Billy. Cut to later on. Billy is now owner of his own hopping television production company. Lucy has now been transferred to several different bowls. Billy sits around turning in their work and getting full credit...

Commentary

This episode clearly reminds us that writers block is not funny. I am sure that was not Nick Castle's intention but, unfortunately, that is where the output sits. Robert Townsend's humor has always been borderline dangerous and he is totally miscast as a conservative everyday man with only a hearty laugh and one scene where he plays 'air guitar.' Michael Lerner supplies the only nourishing sunlight in this tale as a famous television chicken.

How Amazing?
Go Water the Plants instead.
