Summary

John Walters once again visits Mister Liebermacher's Toy Store but this time he is going to make the leap from browser to paying customer. His niece is celebrating her 11th birthday so he intends to pick out a doll. Liebermacher tells him that he will not offer any suggestions, that the right doll will present itself to him. And it does. John feels a strange attraction to the beautiful doll. And after his niece's acceptance of the doll is visually indifferent, John takes the doll as if to return it. But, he keeps it. He spends much time talking to his new companion, Mary D... (He is sure that her name is Mary and that she is a schoolteacher, but he can't land on a last name.) Later, he visits Liebermacher and asks if a model was used. Liebermacher replies in the affirmative. Her name was Mary Dickinson, a school teacher from town. Totally out of his mind he goes to her house to meet her with the doll in his hand. When the real Mary Dickinson answers the door she politely asks him inside. She shows him a doll she bought... A young John Walters...

Commentary

Lithgow (Harry and the Hendersons) and Joanou (Santa, Three O'Clock High) tell such a beautiful story here in such a masterful way. Lithgow was honored with an emmy and Joanou several feature length film projects. The Cinematography is wonderful with a stunningly beautiful musical score by the late Georges Delerue.

How Amazing?
