The final episode of the season, Timothy Hutton directs Andrew McCarthy in this cross generational study.  Things aren't always what they seem.

Summary

The love between Grandpa Charlie and his grandson Edwin is obviously great. Grandpa just lights up when Edwin is around. But Grandpa and Grandma Helen just don't express their love in the same way. On one of their outings, Grandpa tells Edwin about his first date with his wife. After the story is over, he tells Edwin that the next time he sees her he is going to sing to her. The next morning he has passed on. Edwin tries to tell Grandma that he has passed on but, she doesn't listen. Later, Grandpa walks into his house and talks lovingly to his wife. He then takes her out to dinner where they first met. That evening he is as charming as he possibly could be. The next morning she is as happy as can be.  The previous evening was the best she can remember. Content, she passes on. Grandpa removes his make-up to reveal he is actually Edwin.

Commentary

Timothy Hutton did a great job of writing and directing this touching story of elderly love. He also captures some strong images with some very theatrical lighting. Andrew McCarthy is a good alter-ego to Hutton.

Here are the lyrics to "Good Morning Heartache." It is used prominently throughout the episode.
