Thanksgiving is always a nice time to... uh... have someone for dinner.  And you never know just who's gonna drop in...

Summary

Nora lives on a farm with her mean step daddy Calvin. They are working on a well looking for much needed water. As Thanksgiving approaches Nora longs for a turkey, but without water, Calvin tells her, we ain't getting nothing. So Calvin goes down the well and upon his return he informs Nora that the bottom of the well fell through and that he 'almost fell through to China.' They lower a lantern in on a long rope and at one point they are in a tug o' war with something down below. When they finally retrieve the rope, Their lantern has been replaced with gold. Calvin happily runs to town with the treasure to get some supplies. While he is gone Nora makes a care package of ham, a friendly note and an English text book. When she retrieves it, more gold and jewelry and a note written in English (learned from the book) Thanks her for the ham and asks for more stuff. She makes another care package with a chicken and retrieves the traded treasure just as Calvin returns  with a truck with a tow cable. Calvin sends down a thousand flashlights in the on position. Upon retrieval, the batteries have been eaten out with a note saying they preferred chicken. Calvin gets upset at the unfair trade, gets himself armed and goes down into the well himself. Ten minutes later, Nora retrieves the cable to find it loaded with treasure. And a note thanking her for the 'turkey'

Commentary

This gritty piece has a Sam Shephard approach to it and it pays off well. Sedgewick carries the story well and Carradine is just plain nasty. The final silhouette shot is wonderfully obvious where Calvin's body looks like a turkey.

How Amazing?
Happy Holidays!
