What if...? |
Steven Spielberg's sister Ann scripted this story of a young boys empty life. We all could use a little love. |
Summary
Jonah Kelly is starving for attention. His parents are too involved with themselves to pay him any mind. Even his babysitter is annoyed by his existence. So, he spends his time asking people if they 'want a little boy.' They all have reasons to say no. He sees a beautiful pregnant woman leaving a toy store. He asks her if she is pregnant. She answers in the affirmative and that she was hoping for a boy just like him. Jonah asks her what she bought him and she produces a stuffed animal identical to his own animal. He then meets a mysterious crossing guard. That night when his parents come home they do not see him at all. The crossing guard again appears and takes him away. Cut to the expecting mother in the hospital. The doctor opens the door and removes his mask, he is the crossing guard. "it's a boy." |
Commentary
The sterile home architecture and the music do well to create the mood of the story but the crossing guard comes across as a mix of Gallagher and Mister Rogers. the kid really isn't bad but the situation is so cold and deplorable that the payoff is just too small. |
