The orcs and Goblins have probably the largest selection of characters available to them in all of Warhammer: 9 choices each for both Lords and Heroes. This assures you of being able to tailor your command figures to your own personal style of play. There are a few general guidelines which bear mentioning: Unless you have an all goblin horde, you will most likely want an Orc for your Warboss. After a long time using only the standard Orc Warboss (and with much success) I recently decided to start using a Black Orc Warboss instead. Surprisingly, I find myself liking the change - both for the extra mayhem he can generate as well as the reduction in animosity problems. A Great Shaman as general will bring the seriously fun spells of the Big Waaaghh, but you need to be careful to give him an army which is appropriate to his particular stengths and weaknesses. Goblin Shamen are cheaper than orcs if you need to shave a few points. Given the leadership of Orcs (and especially goblins), a Battle Standard Bearer, sometimes called a "Boss Stand'ad Bast'ad", is never a bad idea.
Probably the most important thing to say on the subject of your warboss is that his most important stat is always his Leadership, and you should always put him where that Leadership will be the most effective. That means he should be front and center leading his most numerous troops, which are usually infantry. Sticking him way out on a flank, racing ahead on a boar, or flying all over the field on a wyvern will likely fail to instill much confidence in his boys. |
