THE SAYINGS OF MARTIN LUTHER
PREFACE
A true and comprehensive study of the man, Dr. Martin Luther, would not be complete without studying the WHOLE man, not only what has been published about him, but also, what hasn’t been talked about concerning his vast writings and his little-known sayings.
We quote Luther’s own words stating how one’s sayings reveal the man. He says:
“Human speech also indicates something...; for through it the heart of man can be known. As the common saying has it: I have his heart or his intention when he has only spoken his words. This is so because the intention of the heart follows the word and from the word, the heart is known as if it were in the word...The pagans said, ‘A man’s speech is just like his life.’...’If the heart is pure, it speaks pure words...’...’The German proverb says: ‘The mouth flows over with what fills the heart.’” MARTIN LUTHER
Following this are the true sayings from the writings of Martin Luther. They can be found in any public library which has his 55 Volume set of works. While these writings were available in Europe for the past 400 years, they first became available in English in the United States in about the 1960's. Why they were probably suppressed for so long will be self-evident.
As a bird is known by its song, so Martin Luther is known by the words that came forth from his mouth. Matthew 15:11-15
In this study of Martin Luther, we will first present his own quotes. Then later, we will discuss them in light of the Bible.

THE SAYINGS OF MARTIN LUTHER
VOLUME 34, pg. 331 - “Then he (said to me, Luther) “If you had the pope and the cardinals in your power, what would you do?” “I would,” said I, “show them all respect and honor.” Thereupon he, wagging his finger with an Italian gesture (of complete contempt),...and so he left.”
VOLUME 34, pg. 335 - In his writing, “AGAINST THE 32 LOUVAIN ARTICLES”, Luther said, “For here the damned brood of Louvainists is mad and rages...”
VOLUME 34, pg. 366 - “...the devil and his retinue, pope and papists, are so sincerely hostile to me...Let them go to hell, they have deserved it!”
VOLUME 41, pg. 10 - In his LETTER AGAINST THE COUNCILS held by the Catholic Church, Luther addressed the secular leaders and said, “In God’s name, if you lords–emporer, kings and princes–like the way in which these accursed, damned people (the popes) trample [you]...etc.”
[It should be mentioned here, that anyone who opposed Luther was usually labeled by him as a heretic, babbler, prattler, demon-possessed, fanatic, new spirits, sacramentarian blasphemers, fools, rascals, wicked fellows, wiseacres, flimsy rotten buffoons, asses (the donkey kind), asses (the “other” kind), and words that will not be minced over to reveal the real “heart” of the real Martin Luther.]
VOLUME 41, pg. 72 - In addressing the Pope in his writings on Councils, Luther says, “Listen, papal ass, you are a particularly crass ass, indeed, you are a filthy sow!”
VOLUME 41, pg. 219 - Luther sarcastically writes, “For he [Harry of Wolfenbuttel] is an excellent man, as skillful, clever, and versed in Holy Scripture...as a sow on a harp...They are indeed not worthy of anyone better. ‘Cattle are like the cattle shed,’ said the devil, and pushed a fly into his mother’s rear end.”
VOLUME 41, pg. 264 - “...what a master conjurer the pope is...before we can turn around, he has conjured horse dirt into our mouths.”
VOLUME 41, pg. 270 - In stating that Rome used double talk language that actually meant just the opposite, Luther says, “...you must understand...when they call Germany the praiseworthy nation, it really means the beasts and the barbarians, who are not worthy to feed on the Pope’s dung, like the Italian [papist]...Campamus...did, when he...returning to the Italian frontier, turned his back on Germany, squatted, bared his behind, and said...’Look here, you beasts, look up my ass.’”
VOLUME 41, pg. 276 - “But it does help the ‘See’ of Rome to uncover themselves front and rear, and lets us see into their behinds so that we can know them.”
VOLUME 41, pg. 280 - In writing licentious insults against Pope Paul, Luther says, “Oh, dearest little ass-pope...don’t dance around...For the ice is...solidly frozen this year...you might fall...If a fart should escape you while you were falling, the whole world would laugh at you and say...’How the ass-pope has befouled himself.’”
[Few people know about Luther’s filthy language and verbal graffiti, and do not realize this is not the language of a Christian, but of a rebellious neo-Catholic.]
VOLUME 41, pg. 281 - Mocking the Pope as if talking to him, Luther says, “Silence, you heretic! What comes out of your mouth must be kept!” [Luther answers] “I hear it–which mouth you mean? The one from which the farts come?...Or the one into which good Corsican wine flows? (Let a dog shit into that.)” [Pope] “Oh, you abominable Luther; should you talk to the pope like this?” [Luther] “Shame on you too, you...crude asses...you are a crude ass,...ass-pope, and an ass you will remain.”
VOLUME 41, pg. 334 - In attacking Pope Nicholas’ decretal, “OMNES”, Luther writes, “Perhaps...the Kings would fear...the pope’s farts - ...as Nicholas raves and farts in “OMNES”...What does the pope say? “Come here, Satan! And if you had more worlds than this, I would accept them all, and not only worship you, but also lick your behind...” But all of this (decretal) is sealed with the devil’s own dirt, and written with the ass-pope’s farts.”
VOLUME 41, PG. 344 - “...I can with good conscience consider him (the pope) a fart-ass and an enemy of God. He cannot consider me an ass, for he knows that I...am more learned in the Scriptures than he and all his asses are.”
VOLUME 41, pg. 281 - “Dear one, should such bishops and emperors done wrong [according to the pope], and should they be damned merely because this farting ass in Rome (what else can he do?) Sets up, out of his own mad head, and farts, out of his stinking belly, that it is not fitting for the emperor to convoke a council?...”
VOLUME 41, pg. 344 - Writing about Pope Clement’s decretal after reading it, Luther says, “I was frightened and thought I was dreaming, it was such a thunder clap, such a great, horrid fart did the papal ass let go here! He certainly pressed with great might to let out such a thunderous fart - it is a wonder that it did not tear his hole and belly apart!”
VOLUME 41, pg. 345 - “If I were to ask here, ‘But what did all the other apostles...pasture? (in the sense of discipling sheep) perhaps the big fart of the papal ass will say that maybe they pastured rats, mice, and lice, or if it went well, sows, just so that the papal ass remains the [chief] shepherd, and all apostles swineherds.”
VOLUME 41, pg. 358 - “But the papal ass wants to be lord of the church, although he is not a Christian, believes nothing, and can no longer do anything but fart like an ass.”
VOLUME 37, pg. 236 - “This...is the same as if the arrogant devil were to say, ‘You miserable mad Luther, must I answer you and refute your arguments? Poop on you!’”
VOLUME 45, pg. 375 - “We have taken upon ourselves the support of a host of doctors, preaching friars, masters, priests and monks; that is to say, great, course fat asses decked out in red...looking like a sow bedecked with a gold chain and jewels...”
VOLUME 41, pg. 221 - “A seven-year-old child, indeed a silly fool, can figure it out on his fingers - although that stupid ass, the pope together with his damned Harrys cannot understand anything.”
VOLUME 41, pg. 250 - Commenting against Hanswurst who wrote a book, “REJOINDER” against Luther, Luther retorts, “You should not write a book before you have heard an old sow fart; and then you should open your jaws with awe, saying, ‘thank you, lovely nightingale, that is just the text for me.’”
VOLUME 41, pg. 191 - Speaking of opponents, Luther states, “They are shameless and damned liars...”
VOLUME 41, pg. 192 - Speaking about Harry of Wolfenbuttel, Luther raves, “Harry, you are a damned liar and scoundrel, and your papacy with you.”
VOLUME 41, pg. 206 - Luther, speaking of himself, “We too were formerly stuck in the behind of the hellish whore, this new church of the pope...so that we regret having spent so much time in that vile hole.”
VOLUME 41, pg. 335 - In an imagined blasphemous dialogue between the Lord and the pope, Luther writes, “First as heard above, the Lord wishes to have his church built on Himself, the rock...’No’, says the ass-pope, ‘it means that one should obey me and regard me as a lord...Again the Lord gives the whole [both elements] of His [Eucharistic] sacrament to Christians.’ ‘No’, says the fart-ass pope, ‘one element is enough for the layman; the whole belongs to the priests.’ Again the Lord wants to have His sacrament given to strengthen the poor consciences through faith.’ ‘No’, says pope fart-ass, ‘one should sacrifice it for the dead...’ Again the Lord wills that whoever dies in the true faith shall certainly attain salvation.’ ‘No’, says the papal ass, ‘One must first go to purgatory...’ Again, the Lord wills the efficacy of His baptism shall remain as often as we repent, as long as we live here.’ ‘No’, says the ass-fart pope, ‘the baptism is soon lost...’ Again the lord wills that whoever confesses his sins and believes the absolution, should be forgiven.’ ‘No’, says the ass-pope fart, ‘faith does nothing; but your own repentance and atonement do...’”
Anyone reading THE SAYINGS OF MARTIN LUTHER for the first time is, no doubt, shocked by the vulgarity, venom, and vituperative nature of his attacks on both his opponents, as well as the papacy. One is truly left with the feeling whether Luther’s viciousness left any room for Christian love (that he wrote about) in his own character. Further, one is left with the suspicion: Was Martin Luther really a Christian at all?
Real Christians can agree with Luther that the Catholic church certainly is one of the worst apostate religions in all Church history. It’s demonic, idolatrous, and blasphemous roots are well known by its biblical critics. But that it is the ONLY apostate church is not so. Apostate churches abound and have abounded from the very beginning of the Church Age. Luther’s own beliefs need to be carefully and fully scrutinized biblically apart from any previous Catholic traditions and papal accretions or pre-existing denomination dogmas that came out of the Roman church, as well as Luther’s own additions to Scripture and his personal opinions and interpretations and re-interpretations of both papal ideas and biblical ideas.
What we wish to call to your attention in these sayings is Luther’s lack of concern for the lost, his sin against Christ’s command to “love your enemies”, and “do good to those who despitefully use you”, not to seek personal vengeance, for “Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord.”
No true godly, walking, Christian would ever use such vile, filthy language in witnessing to any false cult religion no matter how far off biblical base they might be. There is no excuse for such ungodly speech by a man who boasted that he knew the Bible, more than the whole combined papacy. Nor was he justified due to the “persecution” he said he was enduring. Jesus said: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.”
Luther may have translated these passages into the German Bible, but apparently, he never practiced them. Also, one cannot say that, perhaps, he said these sayings early in his life, when he first became aware of the Roman church as an apostate church. Not so. these sayings were spoken during the last years of his life, as late as 1541 [he died in 1546].
In addition, Luther was not a man to conceal [or deal with] his frequent sins of anger, bitterness, slander, abusive speech, course jesting, etc. He may have translated these following verses, but there is little evidence that he actually dealt with them or applied them throughout his life.
VERSES IGNORED BY LUTHER IN HIS SAYINGS
Ephesians 4:29 - “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to those that hear.”
Ephesians 4:26b - “Do not let the sun go down on your anger.”
Ephesians 4:31 - “Let all bitterness, and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you along with all malice.”
James 1:20 - “...the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.”
James 1:21 - “Therefore putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness.”
Colossians 3:8 - “But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.”
Ephesians 5:4 - “...and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting which is not fitting...”
1 Peter 4:11 - “Whoever speaks, let him speak, as it were the utterances of God.”
In defense of Luther, one might say that, if WE had to live under the pressure HE had to live under at his time, we might have “lost our cool” also. Or one might say, perhaps he “backslided” in his later life as a Christian and that might explain his verbal carnality. Well, since Luther knew his writings would be published, it was more a matter of pre-meditated verbal insults, rather than spur of the moment impulsive writing. As to whether he really was, in fact, a Christian who had backslided, leads us back to the primary question: Was Luther truly a biblically-defined Christian, or was he a self-proclaimed Christian? Also, upon what GOSPEL did he base his belief that he was a Christian?
As a Catholic, Luther believed in the Catholic sacrament of baby baptism. He continued to believe in infant baptism as the means of salvation and redemption after leaving the Catholic church. He thus appropriated a Catholic sacrament, re-worked it to his liking, and he, not God, instituted it as a “Lutheran” sacrament. Throughout his life, he never changed his opinion or interpretation that baptism was the chief method of salvation, and that God was a sacramentalist who approved of the gospel of water baptism.
In his final sermon in Wittenberg in 1546, shortly before he died, he said, “...as we have often said, it is true that sin is forgiven in baptism...”. In his last sermon, just days before he died, he attacked the Anabaptists once more, who believed that infant baptism saved no one, and that simple faith was the only “means” of obtaining salvation. Luther obstinately concludes his sermon by saying, “How highly honored and richly blessed we [Lutherans] are to know that God...gives us his baptism...” Thus, Luther never recanted his baby baptismal position.
Luther never accepted the Biblical gospel that just simple faith, or free will exercised faith–apart from any Catholic or Lutheran sacramental rituals–was sufficient in itself, in accepting and receiving the one finished work of Christ on the cross on our behalf. So we know what Luther believed til the day he died.
NOW WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY
CONCERNING THE GOSPEL?
John 3:16 - “For God so loved the world” (you and I) “that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever BELIEVES in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” (No baptism mentioned.)
John 3:36 - “He who believes in the Son has eternal life...” (Again, NO water mentioned. Can a baby believe? No!)
Luther said a baby could believe, but offered not a shred of biblical proof. He simply said: “Prove that a baby doesn’t believe.” OK.
Romans 9:11 - “...For though the twins were not yet born, and had not done anything good or bad...” Here we see Rebekah’s children as fetuses who had not done anything good or bad since they were innocent and sinless, until a child commits his/her first sin.
There is no need for baby baptism. If fetuses don’t know right from wrong, then neither do babies who are incapable of sinning, speaking and have no knowledge of good or bad. They lack the mental processes to “believe” as well as all the other processes of reasoning, logic, and computation.
1 John 5:1 - “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God;” [Babies cannot believe that Jesus is the Christ because they lack the comprehension to do so. Ask any elementary school teacher who is not a Lutheran. Notice: No baptism is mentioned.]
1 John 1:7 - “...and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from ALL sins. [Blood, not water, washes us and cleanses us from sin. NO baptism mentioned.]
Romans 3:21 & 22 - “But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested...through faith (ALONE) in Jesus Christ for all those who BELIEVE.” [NO baptism mentioned.]
Romans 3:28 - “For we maintain that a man is justified by faith APART from works of the Law.” [This faith is not something that is imputed at baptism as Luther maintains. How can a baby know what the works of the Law are? This verse implies a knowledge of the Law (which babies do not have) in contrast to faith (which babies also do not have). One must know what faith is, as well as the Law, in order to comprehend the verse!]
Ephesians 2:8 & 9 - “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works” (sacraments), “that no one should boast.” [Luther frequently boasted of his baptism, and reviled his opponents who tried to show him his error. There is NO baptism in these verses, and a sacrament is a definite work of man that uses definite actions and deeds to be done during the sacramental ritual.]
Romans 5:1 - “Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” [NO baptism mentioned. Faith only, WITHOUT sacraments, justifies us, otherwise we wind up trying to save ourselves through such false rituals.]
Titus 3:5 - “He saved us, NOT on the basis of DEEDS WE have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the” (blood) “washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit.” (Parenthetical is added for clarification.) [NO baptism in this verse.] The capitalized words are frequently omitted in some Lutheran Catechisms. We are saved NOT on the basis of deeds, even if the deed is a righteous deed.
Luther admitted that baptism is a deed and a work (Volume 36, pg. 62), but tries to whitewash the participants’ deeds in the baptism as not being deeds, and says God is doing ALL the deeds in baptism, and the parents, pastor, god-parents, and baby do no deeds, truly a classic bit of double talk. Luther’s explanation is an outright deception in trying to cover up the fact that a sacrament is, in fact, a deed done by men in cooperation with their supposed God, and as such, they violate Titus 3:5.
CONCLUSION
The two questions we have asked are:
Was Luther truly a biblically-defined Christian, or was he a self-proclaimed Christian?......and,
Upon what Gospel did he base his belief that he was a Christian?
Our answer to the first question is that Luther was not a biblically-defined Christian since he added a ritual sacramental deed to the biblical concept of God’s free grace and a church-mandated ordinance as the means of obtaining salvation. Therefore, he denied that salvation was a free gift of God (with no strings attached). He said that faith wasn’t found in man until it was imputed into him at the time of baptism, thus rejecting God’s invitation of salvation to “whosoever will”, in Revelation 22:17.
We therefore conclude that he was a self-proclaimed “Christian”.
As to the second question; Luther based his gospel of salvation on a former Catholic sacrament: water baptism. He truly believed that in baptism all sins are forgiven. Yet Paul, the Apostle clearly shows that baptism is not part of the gospel of salvation and that Paul himself rarely baptized anyone, and actually separated baptism from his gospel of the cross when he says:
“For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, that the cross of Christ should not be made void. For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness...” 1 Corinthians 1:17 & 18.
Notice that Paul separated baptism from the gospel. If baptism were truly the means of the gospel to salvation, why does he say he was NOT sent to baptize? Luther connects the two; Paul separates the two. It never was the “water and the word”, but as Paul says, it is the “word of the cross” that saves. That implies a reasoned preaching appeal to the free will faith to comprehend the gospel, and a free will to choose salvation by faith. Babies can’t understanding preaching, or the cross, or the doctrine of faith, or grace, or law, or the free gift of God or any religious theology.
Therefore, we conclude that Martin Luther was not a Christian by biblical definition, that his gospel was another gospel contrary to Scripture, and that he died as an unsaved man. (Galatians 1:9; Matthew 7:20 - 23; Proverbs 16:25; 21:16)
THE TRUE GOSPEL
Jesus Christ, God and Savior of the world (Titus 2:10 & 13), came to planet Earth from heaven, to die on the cross, bearing our sins in His body (1 Peter 2:24), in substitutionary atonement for ALL our sins. He shed His blood unto death to make a ONE TIME, ONCE FOR ALL, FULL payment of our sins for those who BELIEVE by simple FAITH ONLY (plus nothing else).
He was crucified, died, was buried, went to hell in our place, and rose again on the third day, having PAID IN FULL for our sins. His promise to all who simply BELIEVE (trust and rely on totally) this, is eternal life that can NEVER perish or be lost for any reason including committing any sin after we are saved from hell.
Since He paid for ALL of our sins – the sins of an entire lifetime on the cross – there is no sin left unpaid, that can keep us out of heaven, since the debt of any new sin is also paid once we have truly BELIEVED that to be so as God has promised. Thus, salvation does not need works, prayers, sacraments, water baptisms nor the phoney deeds that phoney religions require. Faith ALONE saves us!
BIBLE VERSE PROOFS
FOR YOU TO HAVE FAITH IN
(TRUST IN) FOR SALVATION
1. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” - Romans 3:23, 10. Therefore, simply admit to God that you are a sinner and deserve to go to hell.
2. Realize that Jesus Christ, Who is God in flesh, died for ALL your sins and PAID your sin debt owed to God with His blood, having forgiven you ALL your sins. READ 1 John 1:7c; 1 Peter 2:24; John 3:16; Colossians 2:13 & 14.
3. Claim right now, by simple belief, what Jesus has done for you as your own personal Savior, to receive the FREE GIFT of eternal life. READ: John 6:23 and 1:12.
4. Then realize and believe that: “Having NOW been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God (hell) through Him (Jesus).” Romans 5:9.
According to these Scriptures, IF you truly BELIEVE the REAL gospel of the one finished work of Jesus Christ for all your sins, you are saved and will go to heaven and can NEVER lose your salvation for any reason. John 10:28 & 29.
