Gandalf, the Grey
*written 2001

Hello, I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I'm Gandalf. I was born in Florida, and brought to Ohio where I was given up for adoption. I don't like to think about those days past. They are but just faded memories anyway.

My first real memories began in October of 1999 when I met my soon-to-be adoptive parents, Janet and David. I was just minding my own business, playing with a mouse in my temporary digs at a Petsmart where my adoption agency had brought me when all of a sudden, a sweet voice cooed at me. The next thing I knew, I was in her arms.

I don't know if you could call it love at first sight, but she seemed to really react when I decided to put my front paws around her neck. She said, "David, we have to have him!" And I could tell by the sound of her voice, she wouldn't take no for an answer.

That's okay though, the man scratched my ears and I knew he was just as taken by me. While he signed the papers, the woman, who I now call "mom" held me tightly, talking to me, and making me feel the most secure I had felt in quite some time.

The man, who I now call "dad" was thrilled to learn I had already been named. He said, "If he hadn't been named, I would have named him Gandalf myself."

You see my parents are fond of the
Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings and as some of you may know, Gandalf (the grey) is the name of the Wizard.

But I digress.

It wasn't an easy thing to learn to trust people again, but mom and dad made it very easy to want to try. You see their cat Samson had passed away in August of 1999 from tumors of the liver, and they were looking for someone else to love. I was looking for someone else to love too. And I think we all got our wish.

I've been with them now for 2 and a half years now, (by the way, I'm 3 and a half years old) and though I do have a tendancy to do bad things every now and again, for the most part, I don't get scolded as much as I did in the beginning.

One of my favorite things to do is look out the windows and visit with friends. (I have a girlfriend, it's not serious though, because I don't have those desires anymore, if you get my meaning) still I do enjoy seeing her. And I enjoy watching the birds! I also enjoy playing with my toys, (though mom is forever on to me about picking them up when I get done playing), running up and down the stairs, playing pom-pom chase with mom, and snuggling with mom or dad.
(I also have discovered people food, my favorite is deli ham, and turkey. They also give me these really cool treats every day. They come in all different shapes and flavors. Minnows are one of my all-time favorites!)

I think I'm pretty lucky. There are a lot of cats in my neighborhood, including my girlfriend, who don't have humans to love them and keep them safe and protected. (Although mom and dad have now adopted my girlfriend and named her Sister) It's not every cat who gets to have their ears and bellies scratched daily, kept in the right amount of food and water, and have such cozy places to sleep. (My favorite place by far is between mom or dads legs in their big, warm & cozy bed!)

I'm still not sure why they get mad at me though when I taste a piece of paper, or a plant, or bite them while we are playing. And I don't understand why they have to dunk me in the bathtub every now and then, or take me to the doctors for those horrible shots, but I guess it is all part of being in the family. There are rules, and you have to abide by them. Sometimes I forget, other times I just do it for attention. After all, I'm still a kitten at heart!

All in all, though, I'll have to say, I've got it pretty darn good. Mom and dad say I'm spoiled. I'm not really sure what they mean by that, but if it means that I am loved, well then, I don't mind being spoiled at all!

Oh yeah, mom and dad have other pets too. The fish are really cool. I'd love to taste them. Too bad there's a lid on the tank. I like to smell their food, too, especially the catfish food. It smells like shrimp! Yummy!

And there is this little mouse-like creature they call
*Sasha. Actually mom says it isn't a mouse, it's a Russian hamster. She talks in that same sweet voice to that creature as she does to me. I'm not going to say I'm jealous (though mom and dad say I am), I just get confused. I think she is talking to me. Anyway, I got the lecture on how I was supposed to be nice to Sasha and they always stress, "He is not a Toy!" Well duh, I know that, still if he were alone with me, within my reach, I think I might like to see what he tastes like. SSSSSH, don't tell my mom that!!!
I hope you liked my biography. Enjoy mom's webpage. She has put a lot of work into it! Bye for now!
