--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's how I play "Becoming" live with GNX2:

NO stompbox unless you would like to use it for extra drive.
Compressor at what ever you think it needs to be (I don't).
Set IPS at whammy, up 2 Octaves.
Use a tight noise gate so the palm mutes and stops will be effective.
For the amp, I taylor made one with the GNX technology.
I took a Rectifier (with the bass and treble and bass cranked,-no mids)
and and the British stack (with alot of mids and more treble and
bass at 0)models, cranked both gains, and warped them together.
The cabs used were American 2X12 or something with the cabtune
at 0.0 and the British 4X12 with the cab tune at approx. 3.5.
The result was a heavy chunker with that Marshallish high end.
Because of that rectified fuzziness, it is easy to pull off harmonics
like Dime does from anywhere on the fret board.
You have to dial in the right tone with the warp knob too get the
right treble scratch.
Keep in mind that Dimebag does alot of guitar layering and stacking
in the studio ( thus the "wall of sound" tone), you may never get that
sound without hiring abunch of guys with Randalls to play off stage
during your show.
To get that stacked sound, you could try to use the detune,
or the delay set with no repeats no time and the level where you
like it. something I've also done is use a Boss HR2 set at double
detune with levels cranked. That worked real good.
Just remember you are still only firing off of one amp.
If you really want to make some noise, send the Whammied
dry signal through a Morley A-B-Y box in to two different distorted
amps simultaneously.
To get that whacky screaming thing with the pedal, I turn on the mod to chorus. Assign the mod level to exp2 0min-100 max. Mod depth is assigned to exp3 min shallow- max cranked. Mod speed is assigned to LFO 1 with a fast frequency, and a sinp1 of course, is Whammy. The result is All guitar and no mod at toe up and a scattered frantic scream at the toe down position. When you can't layer live, you need to improvise with GNX2 effects or do what I do and get sick of trying to mimick the processed tones of your guitar heroes and be your own hero. The GNX is a real good tool for that. Dimebag isn't the only one that produces his sound, The studio techs, and the actual Randall amp do alot too. Live he gets help from his roady Grady, and his signature guitars. Unless you want to pay all those guys, lock yourself in your room with your GNX and your amp and any other effects tools you got and dont come out until you grow a pink goatee or write your own article for Guitar World. Sorry about the soapbox verbal diarrhea.-J.Duran
