21 is one of my favorite games to play at
Jay's. Although this variation on basketball is not entirely
original, I think that the way we play it is probably much
more exhausting than the standard game of 21.
Scoring: A shot from anywhere in the court is worth 2
points. A free throw (from the foul line) is worth 1 point.
Object: To be the first player to achieve a score of
exactly 21. If your score goes from 20 to 22, then you are
reset back to 1. To win you must have exactly 21 points.
Game Play: One player, usually the youngest or least
likely to win, is chosen to start the game. That player
stands at the foul line and attempts to make a shot. Because
this shot is a free throw, it is only worth 1 point. After a
player makes a succesful free throw, they are given another.
If a player makes 3 free throws in a row they are allowed to
take the ball back and dribble into play. No player is
allowed more than three free throws in a row. After the ball
enters play each player attempts to either make a shot (thus
earning two points) or prevent a player from making their
shot. Like Hockey, 21 gets very intense and is best played
with 5 or more people. If a player makes a field goal, that
player is allowed to attempt free throws (to the maximum of
three in a row). On a missed free throw, the other players
will attempt to get the rebound and score.
Extra Fun: If your basketball hoop has adjustable rim
height try setting it to its lowest setting. This way every
player can dunk and it makes the game much much much more
intense.
Note: Excessive force/abuse of height is frowned upon but
perfectly legal. Traveling is not a penalty in 21.
