Not to be outdone in front of his hometown crowd of Petts' fans, Jeff Conine lobbied manager Dave Avery for one more at bat and did not disappoint. The firstbaseman sent a two-out, three-run homerun down the line to left to even the score at four through four innings.
The South broke the tie in the sixth on the Tunes' Matt Williams' leadoff homerun and added another run off Chuck Finley of the Tards to take a 6-4 lead. Each club then added a run before the climactic bottom of the eighth inning.
Fielders Choice closer Mike Henneman came on in relief for the South, but provided anything but. Following a single and a walk with just one out, Incarnation rightfielder Larry Walker delivered the critical blow with a two-run triple up the alley in right-center to tie the game at six. After a sacrifice fly scored him to take the lead, the North battered the frustrated Henneman with two singles and a two-run double from Tard secondbaseman Quivilio Veras to put the game on ice.
For his role in the deciding frame, Slattery's Larry Walker was named the
game's Most Valuable Player.
