Flower/fruit: Flowers early summer with numerous male flowers 5mm long in upright cat. Female flowers at base of shorter catkins. Fruit is 2" ball with stout branched spines. Matures in fall splitting in 3 or 4 parts revealing 2 or 3 chestnuts that are shiny dark brown flattened egg-shaped and edible. |
