With the sleepless nights, dirty diapers and high emotions that accompany young parenthood, perhaps the big blowup was inevitable.
On Nov. 30 Britney Spears and her husband, Kevin Federline, had such a heated argument that, a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE in its latest issue, Spears dropped the D-word, and Federline bolted from their Malibu home.
"She wanted a divorce," says a friend of Spears's. And, says a source close to Federline, "when she's upset with him, he likes to give her some space. I don't think she's upset with him because of something specific he's done. I think she's overwhelmed with her new lifestyle – being a wife and mother – and sometimes takes it out on the people who she's closest to and who she knows will stick around."
Spears's way of taking it out on her husband? By showing up that night at the L.A. club LAX and dancing into the wee hours with friends. "It was definitely a girls' night out," says an LAX partner. "Kevin was being punished."
Of course, Federline, 27, didn't seem too tortured during his own marathon of clubbing in Vegas a few days later: First he and his all-male entourage hit Pure Nightclub, where he caught up with Nicole Richie's fiancé, DJ AM, then partied at the club Tao Las Vegas until 4 a.m.
In any case, the punishment proved short-lived. After her 24th birthday on Dec. 2, Spears took a quick jaunt to Vegas (where she checked into the Wynn Las Vegas resort, half a mile down the Strip from her husband's suite at the Venetian), then repaired to Louisiana to spend time with her mother, Lynne, and sister Jamie Lynn.
But by Tuesday, according to a source close to the couple, she had settled back into her Malibu mansion with her husband and their 3-month-old son Sean Preston. "This has happened before," says an insider. "They always work it out."
Britney Seeking Spiritual Help?
Britney Spears is reportedly looking to powers beyond to solve her marital
woes. She’s said to have consulted a psychic.
The singer sought help from the supernatural after her hubby, Kevin Federline, reportedly refused to see a therapist.
“She’s willing to have a third party arbitrate the problems,” a friend told
the upcoming issue of Life & Style Weekly, but her spouse of 15 months
allegedly refused, saying, “That’s for crazy people. If you want to see a
shrink, go by yourself.”

So Brit went to the psychic. “She wants to know if Kevin will cheat, if they’ll have another child and if the marriage will last,” the pal said. Spears, who is said to be up for a role in Broadway’s “Sweet Charity,” also asked the psychic if it would be a good idea to find a role in the play for her hubby, according to the mag. The psychic said that would just mean more problems. Spears’ rep didn’t return calls for comment.
In happier news, Spears reportedly went on a shopping spree in ABC Carpet in Manhattan and dropped $30,000 at Michal Negrin’s jewelry shop there in less than a half an hour. “She was sweet and polite,” a store employee reported. “She just went in and out.”
He’s her Guy, not her fan
Guy Ritchie is not a fan of his wife Madonna’s new album, “Confessions on
a Dance Floor.”
“Guy thought it was [bleep],” Madonna told Music Monthly. “He prefers Irish folk music.”
The “Revolver” director does listen to Madonna’s music, though apparently not happily. “I’m not your typical Madonna fan,” he said. “Do I listen to the wife's music? Do I have a choice?”
Simpson and Electra extend sympathy to Spears
Pop star Ashlee Simpson and actress Carmen Electra have offered their
sympathy to Britney Spears, after hearing of her reported marriage problems.
Last weekend, speculation mounted that the Toxic singer's 15-month marriage to Kevin Federline was over, after the unemployed dancer's Ferrari was towed away from the couple's Malibu, California, home.
Spears, who gave birth to their son Sean Preston in September, was scheduled to attend the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Tuesday, but cancelled. However, Federline, was seen partying in Sin City.
Backstage at the Billboards, Simpson admitted she was unsure if the reports were true, but added: "If it's true I wish the best for her. It's sad."
Meanwhile, former Baywatch babe Electra advised Spears to get out of the marriage quickly if it isn't working.
Electra says: "Sometimes you got to work through it unless you know
for sure it's not working or meant to be. Then move on, don't waste your time."
