The Simple Past is used to talk about states or events that took place at a specified time in the past and are not happening any longer.
The Present Perfect, in contrast, is used to talk about activities that began at some point in the past and are still happening or to talk about facts that happened at an unspecified time in the past and are no longer taking place.
