Brixworth - 2003Paul HooperAs you may know four of the club went to the AK47 day at Brixworth a few weeks back. We stayed over night at a Travel Inn and went and joined most of the crowd on the Friday night at the Red Lion for a game of Hammerin Iron. Needless to say the damn Yankees won again! Saturday morning saw myself, Gareth, Pete and Paul M, wandering around Kettering trying to find some breakfast. After Gareth's second breakfast we arrived at the hall and set up the scenery for our three tables. As usual at this event the scenery was something to behold, one table had a 15mm Aircraft Carrier and baby food plant with signpost about wearing your radiation tab in the baby food plant. There were hospitals, a proliferation of Billboards, French style shops and many more. If you want to see some pictures then go to the Zin Zan website and click on the Brixworth Button on the main menu. There were 26 Competitors with all sorts of different armies So how did we get on? Gareth came 6th with +80, after a good 1st Round he got beaten in the second round and then when on to defeat Fred Cartwright the writer of the rules. Pete Barnard came in 8th with +51 following Gareths path with a win in the first, lost in the second and a final win in the third round. Paul M. managed to just beat me into 15th Place with +10 reversing Gareths formula with a loss in the first round followed by a win and then another loss. Me, well I managed a rather naff 16th place with -31, after losing the first to rounds because of some naff throws on my political flow chart, then on the third game everything went right and I got +60! Despite the different interpretations of the rules, the day was a lot of fun with some wonderful forces and scenery. If anyone else wishes to come next year then please let me know soon. Just as a PS to the article I did on Brixworth for the Mag, if you check out the September issue of Wargames Illustrated you will see an article on Brixworth with a photo of Paul M in the centre and also a picture of the Presidente Hooper Billboards. So I beat the Warhammer people yet again by getting my name and picture into a magazine before they even go to Nottingham! |
