40K Mini-TournamentThe 40K mini-tournament took place on a bitterly cold Sunday, during which I was nursing a terrible hang-over, having consumed way too much alcohol on the previous night after the setting out of scenery. To make this tournie a little different from our previous one, we incorporated most of the standard features from the GW-style competitions. The quiz was courtesy of Barry, who was unfortunately unable to play, and was so replaced by Rug (much to the relief of any of Barry's potential victims I suspect). I did think the questions were hard as he was putting the quiz together, and I managed to avoid the humiliation of admitting how many I got wrong. However, the quiz was well received by the players (much better than my quiz last year) so congratulations and thanks to Barry. We also had 4 themed tables (a jungle, a chemical desert and two city fights; a medieval city and a forge world) and 4 teams, so each team had a home table that allowed them to field an additional 300 point of troops. Normally everyone plays the same mission each round, but as we only had a small number of players, each table had a random choice of 3 missions. The missions were chosen to give some variety and test the flexibility of the armies and commanders involved. There was also some choice over which table you got to play on. The teams were: Rug's Monkeys - Rug, Craig and Matt2 at home in the Jungle. Almost the Imperiums Finest - Mark, Nikki and Graham barely out of the Middle Ages. Eagle Sons - Alex, Adam and Arron from the Anvil of the Forge World The M.I.B. (Martians in Black) - Doug, Chris and Matt1 as Sons of the Desert. Rug's Monkey's were well and truly spanked scoring a miserable 47 points from all 9 games - only 4 more than the M.I.B. racked up in their worst round. The Eagle Sons were lagging until they stormed in for a maximum score of 64 points in their last round. Mark had two of the bloodiest games, and in the third round he faced the rampaging Nids in what seemed to be a re-enactment of Isandlwana, leaving the desert sands stained red. Matt2's Dark Angels proved how stubborn they could really be by facing into a chemical sandstorm and getting annihilated by Doug's cunning Eldar. It didn't go all his own way however, as returning from the battle, his column of Guardian infantry was ambushed by a Landraider Crusader from Aarons Marines, and were cut down in a hail of bolter fire. Overall the home teams lost 7 of 12 games - obviously those additional 300pts didn't really count for much. So the top team was M.I.B. then followed by the Eagle Sons, Almost the Imperiums Finest and finally (and very definitely least) Rug's Monkeys. Overall winner was Chris with Grahame and Matt1 in joint 2nd place, while Rug had the prettiest army, and the most sporting opponent was split between Rug, Matt1, Doug, Matt2 and Mark.
Note: There was bonus points available for beating your opponent on their home terrain, which have been added above. Alex scored two away wins for a total of 7 bonus points, but managed to lose his home game to the all conquering Nid's from Chris's hivemind. |
