Perseverance 2By DenHaving played a game with my new High Elf army that I talked about in the first article I thought I'd do another one following on from the first to let you know how it did. Basically the army got a draw against Jon and his Orc mob, "Not very well then" I hear you all cry, well all I can say is that it would have been a win if Jon hadn't used 3 goblin wolf riders in a 'cheesy' move to block / deflect a charge by my sliver helms into his boar riders! (The fish head's in the post Jon - Sonny). Although on the whole the army did well, and I'd go as far to say that I think it was the most hard fought game that Jon had had against the Elves so far. Each unit did what it was intended to do and some did better than I had hoped, for example the newer units I added were: Chariots - a top tip would be 'don't get charged by two chariots' - a unit of Black Orc's found that they do hit hard - even if they are elf ones! The only problem I had with them was that the Black Orc unit champion with a great weapon and strength 7 trashed a chariot and just tipped the balance in his favour. Phoenix guard - they are better than you would think - I had a unit of phoenix guard with a hero who took on and held a unit of savage orc's on foot and Jon's now famous savage orc boar boyz. Now I admit that having a stubborn hero with the unit helped but they still gave good account of themselves! Silver helms - with their stubborn hero and magic banner they were very manoeuvrable and potentially very hard-hitting. Sadly they didn't get to charge in this game but it was the first time in a game that the elves had a unit go through the enemy lines, turn around and then be in a position to threaten the rear of their other units. Reavers - very quick, very manoeuvrable, able to shoot, strength 4 on the charge, LD9 when rallying and well worth the points, you will see a lot more of these chaps in future elf armies! The other units, archers, bolt throwers & shadow warriors all did well - as they have in most other games. So there you have it, all in all it was a big improvement on earlier games. All I need to do now is beat Gareth and paint them all! |
