Once again a crowd of club members descended on the unsuspecting metropolis of Reading for our annual weekend of gaming with the odd drink thrown in. With callous disregard for their own safety they ventured forth, unsure if they were to ever return - with a petrol crisis on there was every chance that the return trip might have to be on foot ! It was good to see such a large turnout at the show - much down on previous years but still higher than might have been thought. Very few traders cancelled and most of the "punters" seem to have made a special effort to get to the show. The show was still busy, but the crowds were not so dense as in previous years which made getting to the trade stands and the bring-and-buy a lot less hassle.

Once again we stayed at the George hotel which, once again, was offering a cracking deal for the weekend (£19.95 per person per night with breakfast and a meal voucher thrown in). Of the eight in our party six were playing in the competitions with Mike achieving 2nd in the Dark Ages with his Welsh and Neil 3rd with his Normans. In the Ancients Gary was 2nd with a dubious Roman army with Chris (an honorary GOB from Durham) 3rd with his Germans. William (the infamous ex-GOB now residing in High Wycombe) showed early promise with his Huns but faded badly on the Sunday suffering defeats from Gary & Chris.

Andy was in the Pike & Shot with his Bohemians but had to pull out after a roof came in at home making an early bath advisable. No late night Dogs Bollocks for him on Saturday.
Paul M. stood in for Andy on the Sunday for one game but failed to improve the Bohemians performance - of all people he even had the nerve to complain that the army had too many low class troops (Paul normally uses low grade armies himself).

The petrol crisis was breaking over the weekend so we were able to get back OK - no thanks to the morons at the petrol station who caused us to queue for 30 minutes because they 1) filled up then spent ages in the shop picking up sweets whilst their car was still blocking the pump 2) Got to the pump with hubbies range rover only to find out they didn't know how to open the petrol cap and stayed at the pump for ages before eventually finding the right button & then putting all of £5 of petrol in and 3) Left their car in the middle of filling up to try to help (and fail) the silly b*tch in 2).

But we had a good weekend as normal with more money spent on food on drink than on figures (as per normal) and fully intend to repeat the exercise next year - some of use are already planning what armies to use ...
