I was nine...it was my second trip to the track in my life...and there she was. She was stunning, that much was obvious at first glance, but her fragile chestnut body contained so much more than looks. That afternoon she put on a show that demostrated just how much talent she possessed. 21 lengths. Going away. To this day, I haven't seen (live, on TV, or on video) a performance that impressive. Just a few weeks later, she showed the world that she had the heart to match. It was an epic battle between two fillies. The rangy bay on the outside and the dainty chestnut on the rail. Both in white bridles, both running for the joy of having their nose in front. It was the chesnut who had her nostril on the wire first...but it was also she who was pulled up not far past the wire, and she who was vanned off never to race again. She'd be named champion two-year-old filly, while her bay rival would be named champion three-year-old filly the following year and would retire as the leading money earner for her gender. Racing fans were left wondering...if the bay proved to be that brilliant...how good was the chestnut champion who beat her on a fractured leg? | ||||||||||||||||
