Fantastic
run you had last Wednesday John!! So
tell us… what was your secret to running here at Lowes?
Well
Billy, I practiced alot and fiddled with my setup for both tire wear and speed
and I found a good combination of the two. Plus I seem to run tracks like Lowes
well.
There
were a couple of guys who could keep up with you, but no one seemed able to
overtake you all night. Were you
worried there towards the end that maybe Rosemeyer or Surrett were saving their
tires, and after the long green maybe they were setting you up? Worried?
Hell
yes, I was worried!! Anytime you have the caliber of drivers like Al and Troy
chasing you, you know that it will not be long before school starts, you get
passed and you finish the race behind them wondering what happened. I actually
let Troy get a lap back earlier in the race and I got to tell you, towards the
end of the race with Troy and Al right behind me I started to wonder if that
was a wise decision. I had a feeling that when that last caution came out and
there were 60 laps left, that it would probably be the last caution for the
night. I wondered if we went green the
rest of the way if I could hold those guys off for 60 laps and how would my
tires hold up considering I had only practiced running 30-40 lap practice runs.
But the way it worked out my tires passed the test with flying colors and I was
happy to see I was pulling away at the
end.
Well,
you won the “Winston East” the week before, and then completely dominate the
Lowes 300. Think you can carry this
momentum over to Dover?
Good question. I hope that by saying "success breeds success" it's true, but each week I know I am in for
a big battle and I will need to be 100% prepared or I will get my tail kicked.
How
did you think the overall race went tonight?
I
think it went well considering how long a race it was. We had ten cautions, but
that is not all that bad for two hundred laps and most of them were at the
beginning of the race so we had some long green flag runs.
Anyone
you would like to thank?
Yes,
I would like to thank my sponsor Snap-On for providing me with the resources to
have the type of car I had tonight. I would also like to thank one of my fellow
competitors, Al Rosemeyer, for giving me some great advice. My idea of a fast
car was a 55 degree rear spoiler and lots of air pressure (grin). Sometime
earlier in the year after seeing one of the setups I made, he told me that I
needed to change my way of thinking and set my car up for a NASCAR race instead
of a NHRA event. That advice has helped me alot and it is starting to show up
in my finishes and in points.
Thanks
for your time John, and again, Congratulations on your fine win Wednesday
night! Thanks Billy.
