Mike Steger takes the checkered for his first SORS win!!

Well Mike… let me start off by saying…..  It’s about time!!!  You have been so close, so many times to winning…. But this time you closed the deal!  How does it make you feel?

Wow!  Where do I begin?  LOL  I thought for sure it was Al Rosemeyer’s win, but like some words of wisdom from John Hayes  “right place at the right time”!  words that 1st came to mind when I crossed that finish line were “  YES!!, Relieved!  Finally!,

Motivated!  To be honest I was starting to have doubts on my chances of winning a race after 13 races into the season….But now after getting that 1st one…I’m excited about the rest of the season.

I know after the race everyone was thanking Al Rosemeyer for running out of gas, it looked like he would have gotten the win.  Also, Steven Flinn was up there and had electrical problems that ended his chance for the win…. Do you think the monkey is finally off your back??

Yes!  Most definitely Yes!  But, I do have to thank Troy Surrett for his advice, and stressing on being patient! I can’t ask for a better teammate.  I learned a lot from Troy about letting things fall into place!  My outlook for the rest of season has definitely changed my motivation for another win or 2  LOL  Thanks Troy!

You have been consistently fast this season, and you are still in the points chase…. What is your goals, and what do you expect of yourself going into the second half of the season?

I’m just looking to finish each race with a undamaged car, avoid any trouble, and see if I can put that #20 Army National Guard Chevy Monte Carlo in the top 5 each week for the reminder of season. That’s about all one can expect to try to achieve in my position.

In the Michigan race, I know all those yellows early had to be frustrating… how did you manage to keep cool, and keep that #20 car up front all night?

“A lot of deep breathes, and patience!”  LOL      Again, it’s just from experience from previous races with similar situations.  Stay kewl, keeping yourself focused, and not forcing the issue. Things I‘ve learned from previous races when I ran well for 99% of the race, and that remaining 1% in decision making cost me a good finishing position.  But Being Patient is the key!

Were you expecting it to go for a long green at any time… or did you have to adjust your strategy once it got into the long green run?

I was hoping for a long green run!  I had practiced all week to tweak and dial in the setup for a long green runs.  Michigan being such a wide track, there’s no reason not to have long green runs there.   No Strategy had to be changed. I planned on taking only 2 tires and 1 can of gas with 20 or less to go under green.  It paid off!

Did you have to make any changes to your car during the race?  It seemed a lot of drivers came in too loose, and maybe running in heavy traffic really surprised them.

No changes at all!  I practiced alot running in traffic, high line, low line, etc to make sure my setup wasn’t loose, or wouldnt get loose with others around me

Mike, once again let me say… “Congrats on the excellent win at Michigan”!!!  I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more!! Is there any last comments you would like to make, or how about a word for that sponsor?!

I’d like to thank my Sponsor, the Army National Guard, for their continued support!

Thanks to Teammates, Troy Surrett, and Mike Brazier; and all the SORS East drivers for some exciting racing week

I have to especially say thanks to Brent May, for teaching me on car setups. I learned a lot from that guy on how to tweak a car!

Thank you Billy Stratton!  You’re doing a great job as SORS EAST Admin, and it shows!
