The third aspect of the triple goddess is the Crone, the dark goddess. She is the hag, the wise one with accumalated knowledge through the journey. She represents transformation, death and the time of havest when we reap the fruits of our labour. We start our journey with the first appearance of silver hair and coming of menopause. She is Hecate, Kali, Cerridwen, the cat, the snake.
We see many Crone protray as the old witch stirring up her bubbling cauldron. She is the one people come for advice, for help. She is the fairy godmother who aids Cinderalla overcome her obstacles. She is the one who can reveal and teach us a few secrets. In the Burning Times, a older single woman is automatically assumed doing evil doings with witchcraft and was prosecuted. The Burning Times see many great wise women being burned or hanged, the knowledge these women had been a threat. Traditions have since been lost, with many witches hiding inside the closet and sharing the paths only with the closest of family or coven members.
The crone is represented by the dark moon, hidden after a luna cycle. It is the time to recongise the ending and to allow the natural cycle to continue. This is the age or time that women fear most, wrinkles appears and their body not as what it was before. There is this impression that older women are a burden and useless; that is totally untrue. The Crone reflects the most valuable aspect, not just from the knowledge, but through the understanding of life's journey, to see the beauty beyond the physicality, to aged gracefully and the silver hair crowns the glory of the achievements.
The crone is often involved in healing, like the Medicine Woman in Native American culture. They gives off a solitary, almost an assuring peaceful solitude. Most of us have to deal with solitude at one phase of our life or other, but at the crone stage, we managed to find the peace in silence, to be comfortable with solitary. It would be helpful to practise meditation to unlock the unconsciousness into discovery the inner self.
The Crone is an aspect of ending
and is associated with rituals/spells involving banishing or "rid of".
I think the best way is to be honest
and confront the things that you wish to end, example: the job that you
hates, a relationship that is going nowhere, your smoking habit, biting
of nails...
Do it on a waning moon night and
write down the thing you want to get rid of.
Hold the paper and visualize the
effects of the thing you want to get rid of coming true and the outcome
desired. Example: To try to get rid of your smoking habit, in your visualization,
think of the method to use, like nicotine patches, and see yourself having
the will power to stay away from the stubs and that your lungs are clear
of the smoke. See yourself going through the day without lighting up and
without the smell of smoke around you. See yourself having the encouragement
from your loved ones, and the strength to quit. See yourself in the long
run, having freed from the habit.
Burn the paper.
