On July 16, 1956, Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus gave their last performance under a tent.

 

The top films of 1956 were: Bus Stop, Giant, The Ten Commandments and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

 

Grace Metalious' Peyton Place is a best seller.

 

Julie Andrews stars on Broadway in "My Fair Lady".

 

Drive-in Theaters boom. There were 7000 drive-ins, more than triple the number in 1950. 11 percent of all cars sold are station wagons. Some drive-ins provide heaters in the winter. But, many people are staying home to watch T.V., turned off by high theater prices. $2.00 in N.Y. and $1.50 in L. A.

 

Elvis exploded onto national charts with Heartbreak Hotel, Don't Be Cruel and Blue Suede Shoes. On September 9, Ed Sullivan show had a record audience of 54 million, but T.V. Censors had seen enough. His next apperence, in January, would show just his face!

 

New things on the market this year: Comet Cleanser, Raid to do in bugs and Imperial margarine.

 

M. E. Tower was first woman ordained as a Presbyterian minister.
