April 2, 1959 in Washington D.C., NASA picks first seven cadidates for space travel, known as Astronauts.

 

Mason City, Iowa, February 3, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J.B. "Big Bobber"Richardson were killed in a plane crash. Buddy Holly, age 22 had such hits as "Peggy Sue". Valens, age 17 was well known for "La Bamba" and Richardson age 24, was known for "Chantilly Lace".

 

In detroit on November 19, the Ford Edsel was discontinued. Few than 100,000 were sold in two years.

 

On T.V. Lorne Green starred in Bonaza and Clint Eastwood in Rawhide.

 

Films of the year were" Ben Hur, Some Like It Hot, Pillow Talk, Gidget, Suddenly Last Summer, Anatomy of a Murder and North by Northwest.
