Faraday Cage with Copper Shielding

External electromagnetic interference can interfere with the internal electronics of a CD player. One effective way to shield the internal electronics is to build a Faraday Cage over the transport and printed circuit board (PCB). Companies like Marantz use copper plates to shield their CDPs (e.g. CD63 SE, CD67 SE) and this idea was adopted.

A thin copper sheet was purchased at www.multimetals.com and coated with two layers of Tamiya acrylic clear finish. (This is to prevent the oxidation of the copper plate when exposed to air). Six ventilation holes were drilled into the plate. The plate was next cut into the proper dimensions and glued beneath the CD transport and PCB.

The illustration below shows the Alpha 7 before and after fixing the copper plate.
