Edgar Allen Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. His parents were Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins and David Poe Jr, both touring actors. Unfortunetly, they died when Poe was three. Edgar moved in with his foster family, the Allans, however, he was never officially adopted. Poe attended the University of Virigina and proved to be very studious. However, Poe ran up a large gambiling debt which upset his adopted family. His foster father refused to pay the debt, prevented Poe's return to the universtiy and broke off his engagement with Sarah Elmira Royster. Broke and brokenhearted, Poe enlisted in the army. After a reconcillation with his foster father, Poe was given a position at West Point by the Allans, however, he was given no finacial support. Poe was not content in his new position and purposely disobeyed orders inorder to be dismissed. With funds raised by his fellow cadets, Poe published his third work, Edgar A. Poe... Second Edition (1831). Poe moved in with his Aunt and cousin, Virigina in Baltimore. He publised five of him poems, all of which one a $50 prize. He moved his Aunt and cousin to New York and shortly married his cousin who was not even 14 years at the time. Poe continued his carrer as a critic, analyzing works from even famous authors like Dickens.
