2002 Boston Music Awards

"Review"

I purchased our tickets to the 2002 BMA’s only because Godsmack was nominated. And having them perform was an added bonus. And of course I wouldn’t accept anything but the best seats. It’s the only way to go! Well, my husband and I arrived fashionably early! Looking forward to quenching my thirst before sitting in a cramped seat (Orpheum theatre seats are awful!) I quickly learned that they were only serving beer and wine. Yuck! So, I just hung there while my husband quenched his (lucky him). I had made a few comments about some of the people who were around us and their unique sense of style in fashion. Most of who were actually nominees, which I did not find out until they approached the stage to receive their awards. Who knew? Lol.

We then decided to head off to our seats. I was surprised to find that we were in the 4th row and not the 8th, which I thought. The show began with a performance by Joey McIntyre (the host) who also, I might add was pretty funny. He even made fun of himself when he was a New Kid on the Block and brought out a NKB sleeping bag, backpack, water bottle and a backpack. Joey was only 15 when he first performed at the Boston Music Awards (BMA’s).

The first award Godsmack was up for was Male Vocalist of the Year (Sully Erna), which of course he won. Sully made his way up to the stage and accepted the award with excitement and a huge smile on his face! He’s so frick’n cute!

Thankfully, it was not too long into the show when because Godsmack had their performance. In between performances and awards, they sat over to the right of us, which was nice. They were all escorted by their significant others, even Robbie…I think, but don’t quote me on that…as I could be wrong.

After a few performances and awards it was because Godsmack time to rock. And rock they did. The performance, needless-to-say was awesome! They began with Spiral and then surprised us with an “all group” drum solo (oxymoron…I know…lol), which lasted a good 10 minutes. It was really awesome and exciting to see Tony drumming the (tall) bongos with mallot looking sticks (which Sully usually uses), Sully was sitting low to the ground drumming on a couple of different pairs of bongos, with his hands, Robbie was banging the heck out of a tambourine, with a drumstick, and of course the wonderful drummer himself Tommy who was wailing on his. It was very impressive and I am thankful for being able to see that for the first time.

After the wonderful drum solo, they went into I Stand Alone. Again, it was totally awesome. I do have to make a note that in the chorus (now it’s my time…my time to dream, etc.) I thought it was Tony and Sully together that sang that, but if I’m not mistaken only Sully sang it (?). And unfortunately there wasn’t any pantsing of any member’s…lol.

There were several more performers and then Godsmack graced the stage again to present the award for Outstanding Single Label on an Independent Label. While they were waiting for the winners to arrive, Sully called out for Moonbaby as he wanted to give her his beer. Unfortunately she had stepped out for a minute, but on return, Sully tossed it to her. Luckily for the people around her, the cup was only ˝ full…lol.

Another presenter was made up of a couple, I believe from a group. The girl was wearing a white t-shirt that read, “Fuck you, you fucking fuck!” The man asked if it was a statement or something. Her reply was “why, is it offending you?” and then proceeded to take the shirt off. At least her pink bra, matched her pink pants…lol.

The next award Godsmack won was for Outstanding Rock Band on a Major Label. It was nice to see all the guys be able to get up on stage and accept an award together. Sully thanked the fans while Tommy made a statement about the Bruins vs. the team he is from (Michigan), sorry I’m not a hockey fan…lol.

Another highlight of the evening was when the award for Vocalist of the Year was received by Carly Simon. She is awesome and very graceful and professional. She happened to have sat next to the man who produced her very first record, 30+ years ago, which she sang a little of it for us. It was cool.

The award for Rising Star was won by Reveille (was not present), which was presented by Mr. Paul Geary of PGM, who is also the manager of Reveille.

The last award was presented by Rocko and Alter Boy (from WAAF), in which they both came out dressed like a priest and alter boy (consecutively). Rocko had inadvertently dropped the award envelope and tried to make the alter boy pick it up. Needless-to-say, he did not…lol.
