On the run up to the latest Gulf War the UN was seen for what it had become.
The guard dog of the world had lost it's teeth. It barked and snarled and was ignored. I think that it's fair to say that this dog has had it's day. We need a new dog. Something with teeth that won't let go of the truth and justice that is the birthright of every man, woman and child on this planet, and not just the rich and powerful.
If the UN, in its present form, continues to safeguard us, we're not safe. The UN should police the world, not America or Britain.
I know that this sounds like an enormous task, but I believe that one of the greatest problems our world faces at the moment, could also be the key to saving the planet.
Our planet is beset by disaster, both man-made and natural, on a regular basis. Droughts, tornadoes, wars etc. What if the UN could fly jumbo jets full of medical supplies and surgeons into war torn areas, along with planes full of builders, plumbers and carpenters to start the rebuilding process. UN police patrols would keep law and order until such a time as that country is deemed fit enough to run its own affairs.
These tasks should and must be carried out by an impartial third party. And not by a victorious occupying force.
America has done what it wanted to do in Iraq. They have ousted Saddam Hussein from power. Mission accomplished. Time to go home.
It should be left up to a world police force to decide now whether or not such action was legal, and conduct any further investigations into weapons of mass destruction.
The main problem that will raise it's head is manpower. Where do we get it?
One of the biggest problems facing the richer countries of the world is immigration. An ugly subject that no one wants to mention for fear of being branded a fascist. But I believe that this problem could become the UN's greatest asset.
Everyday our news broadcasts and newspapers are filled with stories of the flotsam and jetsam of the planet trying to get a better life. Whether they are fleeing war, poverty, or starvation they all face the same problem. Finding a new country to call home. And with social infrastructures crumbling, no one is willing to take them. And this is where the UN should step in.
The dispossessed of the world could be offered a chance to serve a term of service within the UN using their life skills. On completion of their term of service the would then be issued with a UN 'Citizen of the World' passport.
I also realise that feeding this many people could in itself cause problems. But if the UN had the power to seize all excess 'consumerables' then the world will be fed and clothed, and food mountains and milk lakes, that keep prices artificially high, will become a thing of the past.
When it comes to the running of the UN it must be 'one country, one vote' and the removal of national vetoes that hold the rest of the world to ransom.
I've always been a fierce critic of the 'New World Order' but I believe that we do need a 'Brave New World' and a brave new UN to run it.
