Modern Man and the Laws of God

When I started building this site I decided that since the only laws that matter are Gods holy laws, I had to at least put in a page of the Ten CommandmentsI know that everybody knows them off by heart but what do they actually mean, and can they really be taken seriously in today's modern world.

1. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.

To answer this question we have to ask, what are gods? Are we talking about celestial beings or the various trappings of modern life? The television, the one eyed god that sits in the corner of the room and keeps the children quiet and couch potatoes happy. To many the 'modern' day phenomena of UFOs has replaced God in many peoples lives. Today the ufologist watches the sky's waiting for the truth to be revealed, looking for a message or sign in the heavens as perhaps the illuminati of yesterday did. Are 'aliens' mans modern equivalent of the angels of God.

Man will continue to search for the truth, and there can be only one truth. If mankind feels the need to visit psychics and mediums, to sit on hilltops looking for bright lights or just sit in front of the box, they are indeed worshipping the God that created them. We don't hold these things in a higher esteem than God. We worship them as part of Gods great creation.

2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

If we try to enforce this little gem then I'm afraid sculptors and artists are out of a job and our mantelpieces are going to look rather bare without any ornaments. Can you imagine Hilda Ogden without her 3 flying ducks up the wall.

Provided that we don't love our ornamentation more than God, I think we can put this commandment into room 101 without to much fear of divine retribution.

3. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain.

I must admit that I do agree with this one, but I would still prefer to here a little blasphemy than the constant stream of profanity that seems to spring forth from most lips these days.

4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

These days, the 7 day week no longer exists. Everywhere is always open, 24/7. Some of us can afford the luxury of taking Sunday as a day of rest, others can't. If they're not working then for some it is the only day they have to do the shopping, the housework, etc. Again the laws of man override the Law of God.

5. Honour thy father and thy mother.

This one is easy and if you can't do it then I'm afraid you deserve Hell. But I must admit that seeing some of the excuses for parenting that goes on, finding honour is going to be a long job.

6. Thou shalt not kill.

Another easy one, or is it? Unless we are followers of Jainism, I'm sorry to say that we will have trouble with this. Now, if it was changed to thou shalt not murder, then I think that any civilised person could keep this commandment with ease.

7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

I keep reading in the problem pages of magazines about people who have committed adultery, and the question that they all seem to ask is, "Shall I confess all to my partner?" My answer to this is a most emphatic NO. Why should you confess and upset or mortally wound the one that you supposedly love to assuage your own guilt. Live with your guilt and let God judge you.

8. Thou shalt not steal.

Although still a crime in the eyes of Man aswell as God. Mankind seems to be heading towards total leniency for this crime. 100 years ago men and women alike were sentenced to be transported to some hell hole of an island halfway around the world for daring to steal food to feed their families. For a lot of those criminals it was a death sentence. Today children and adults, who rob and steal are treated more like victims than the victims themselves. Yes, stealing is still a crime but successive governments and a host of do-gooders have made sentencing for the crime nigh on impossible.

9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

The great thing about the Internet is the speed at which information can travel around the World. This can also be said about gossip and lies. Gossip has a tendency to be a lie due to the Chinese Whisper scenario. No matter how true the root story is it is a sad fact that the human race always feels the need to embellish what they hear, just to make it that little more interesting. Due to the speed that these lies can now travel, I would have to say that this law is more relevant today than it was 4000 years ago.

10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbour's.

Envy is a terrible thing and it causes much heartache. Your neighbour has a new car so you've gotta have one aswell, whether you can afford it or not. But someone always pays in the end. Your family may never see you because you work all the hours that you can just to 'keep up with the Jones'. Most crimes of theft are crimes of jealousy. Just be happy with your possessions. Because possessions will never make you happy.

I know that in my life I have broken at least 9 of the 10 laws of God, including number 6. I know that it was some time ago, but remember. There is no Statute of Limitations on sin. Do I think that God has forgiven me? I don't know. Have I forgiven myself? No. But having committed acts of evil, I now know what evil is and what it feels like. There aren't many preachers that will admit to that.
