I am often asked why I never had children. As it happens I am very good with kids. But as you have probably gathered, I believe in The End of Times, I believe that Armageddon is coming, I don't believe that it would be fair to bring a child into this world until I know what kind of world little Phil is going to be existing in.
I say existing because any vision I have of the future does not include life as we know it. Our immediate future has only two visible paths at the moment:
All out war. Resulting in billions of people dead or dying from radiation sickness, smallpox and whatever else the madmen that control our world have tucked away in their arsenals. As the generals smash the little panel that sayes, " In case of an emergency, nuke 'em", the Earth burns and its children choke.
But dying during a nuclear/biological/chemical war, wouldn't be half as bad as surviving.
Worst case scenario. You survive the war. You survive sickness and plague. There are others around you crying, screaming, some just sat around in stunned disbelief. There are those that will not be able to comprehend that everything they knew has gone. A human mind can only accept so much before it shuts down and/or madness sets in. Hunger and the instinct for survival will bring out mans animal instincts, for though we revel in our technological achievments, take them away and we are all animals.
With little or no food how long before mankinds baser instincts come to the fore and murder and cannibalism are the only means of survival.
The other way it could go in my mind is that maybe war can be averted but that still leaves terrorist and political and religious extremists running around generally making everybodies life miserable. So what do our collective governments do to protect us from these heinious criminals? They lock the rest of the world up.
This has been happening for years what with CCTV cameras on every street corner, by keeping the streets dangerous the government keeps all law abiding citizens on curfew. "Be in before nightfall, or who knows what might happen."
The common chant that keeps getting bandied about is, "if you've done nothing wrong then you've nothing to fear." Well I say that if my life is always on camera and my right to privacy is being eroded then I do have something to fear.
What people tend to forget is, that once these ideas have been given form, it is very hard to get them removed again. Shadow cabinets and and parliamentarians may howl their disapproval but should they get into power, you can bet nothing changes. And the thing about governments is that they are always bringing out new legislation to curb the thinking public. You may have nothing to fear today but what about tomorrow?
Do I want to bring a child into either of these futures? No.
