End of July 1998
obri Dan (Good Day) from Ljubljana, Slovenia!
ell, we had finally beat our welcome to death with family in the Midwest.
They endured many nights of travel gear strewn across multiple rooms (Thanks Mom and
Dad Born!) to get to this point. When we had gotten it all together, passports in hand
and packs loaded, we attended church with the Born's where the family minister asked for
blessings on our trip. We were off...
ur final goodbyes with family and friends near and far were full of excitement and
even some fear. Boarding passes in hand, neither of us had thoroughly considered how
we would feel as we left our familiar world behind. There were moments of "Are we
crazy?" mixed with "I can't wait!" and the occasional, "There goes the down payment
on our first house!"
s we awoke and landed overseas in Germany, all contemplative thoughts of life came
to a halt when faced with the fast and organized pace of Frankfurt on a bright Monday
morning. It was a good lesson in what everyone could use a dose of - humility - as we
shook off the previous night's sleep and tried to negotiate our way.
train ride and a nap later, we arrived in Munich. Our first day was also our worst
day to date, as the severe jet lag and overwhelming heat and humidity made us wonder
why months of travelling sounded so enticing! However, we braved the humidity, took
in some sights, and met up with two new friends, Clark and Becky Simpson. The Simpson's
direct Young Life club for a US Military base in the heart of Bavaria. We enjoyed
hearing all their stories of life overseas, and were thankful for the bed they gave
us to sleep off our jetlag (12 hours worth!) before we ventured forth to Austria.
