Trekking in Everest/Khumbu Region of Nepal The Everest trekking region is located in the eastern half of Nepal offers a wide range of trekking experiences. From the well- developed trail to Everest Base Camp to treks in remote semi- wilderness areas, there is a choice to suit all comers. Everest region is protected by the Sagarmatha National Park, established in 1976 with an area of 1148 square kilometers. The park is largely composed of the rugged terrain and gorges of the high Himalayas. Altitude ranges from 2845 meters above sea level (9,330ft) to the top of the world, Mt. Everest at 8848 meters (29,028ft). Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, which is known in Nepal as "Sagarmatha" the head of the ocean and ?Chomalangma? in Tibetan the goddess mother of the Earth, has long been the greatest attraction for nature lovers and trekkers alike. Solukhumbu, the heartland of the Everest Region and an integral part of the Himalayan mystique, thus provides a welcome destination for these adventurers. The park contains a variety of mammals, Himalayan Thar, Musk Deer, the Himalayan Red Panda and the Black Bear are all native to the park. Add to the mountain peaks, glacial lakes, rhododendron forests, native flora and fauna traditional villages and ancient Buddhist monasteries, all go to make this region a spectacular destination. Popular trekking destinations in Everest region are Everest Base Camp trek, Kalapattar, Gokyo Valley, Lukla, Namche, Arun Valley trek etc. Interesting landmarks near Syangboche are Khumjung School built by Sir Edmund Hillary. Everest region can be reached by air or on foot. Buses to Jiri leave from the new bus park in Kathmandu. The most convenient for Everest trek is Lukla, which is serviced by many airlines with daily flights from Kathmandu. When to trek in Everest? As most of the trekking areas in Nepal, the best times to visit this region are during the spring and autumn. Spring is the time for rhododendrons while the clearest skies are found after the monsoon in October and November. At these times the weather is generally mild and there is very little rainfall some times. Unlike other part of Nepal, the monsoon, from June to September, is the ideal time to visit part of the region that fall in the rain shadow. In particular, Everest Base Camp is the perfect destination during the rainy season. The winter months provide good trekking conditions throughout the foothills but some of the higher passes will be closed due to heavy snow. Permits and Fees for Everest trek Nepal: No special trekking permits are required to visit most of the area provided that the trekkers do not climb any of peaks. But an entry permit is required to enter the Everest National Park. For treks to the east of the main Everest trail an additional permit is required to enter Makalu Barun National Park and also climbing any peaks or mountains.
