THE STEAM LOCOMOTIVES OF THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY, WERE ALWAYS
SOMETHING TO SEE. THE BEAUTY OF SEEING THE DRIVERS IN MOTION, NO MATTER THE SIZE
WERE ALIVE. COMPARE THE TO THE DIESEL AND THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION, IS A
RECTANGULAR BOX, PULLING MORE RECTANGULAR BOXES. SORRY IF I HAVE OFFENDED THE
DEIESEL LOVERS.
THERE WERE MANY MANUFACTUERS OF SIMULAR LOOK ALIKES. THE WHEEL ALIGNMENTS
WERE ALL THE SAME. THERE MAY HAVE BEEN SLIGHT DIFFERANCES IN THE BODIES, TO MAKE
IT THEIRS. THERE WERE SMALL YARD SWITCHERS, THAT MOVED CARS IN THE YARDS, TO THE
MASSIVE HAULERS OF FREIGHT TO THE STEAMLINERS FOR PASSENGERS. BUT ALL BEAUTIFUL
TO SEE IN MOTION.
HERE YOU WILL GET A LOOK AT SOME OF THE DIFFERENT LOCOMOTIVES & SOME
HISTORY COME ABOARD AND ENJOY THE TRIP.
Steel cars, heavier tracks, more sophisticated locomotives and increased
traffic brought America's railroads to their modern form by 1920. The automatic
coupler and air brakes became standard. Compounding - using steam more than once
- and articulation were combined in large Mallet-type freight locomotives
capable of moving prodigious numbers of cars. Trailing trucks (ex: Rear Wheels
on the Loco as a 2-6-2 allowed bigger fireboxes, and superheating made
engines more efficient.
