Montreal Funicular

Crab A nickname for an engine developed by Ross Winans in the 1830s. Its main and side rods stroked in opposite directions, suggesting the motion of a crab.

It does not say what it was used for.

SIDE RODS: A steel rod that connects the crankpins of any two adjoining wheels on the same side of a locomotive to distribute the power from the main rod to the driving wheels.

FUNICULAR:A cable railway on a steep incline, esp. one with simultaneously ascending and descending cars counterbalancing one another.
