Dennis> Hi my name is Dennis Proffitt, I'm President and Producer of Golden Eagle Video and were talking with Julia Butterfly Hill who is up in a tree. 180 ft' in above ground, in a Redwood, and a 1000 years old. Trees name Luna.Dennis> Hi Julia. Julia> Hi Dennis.
Dennis> How did you get involved with Luna?Julia> Well, uh. It kind of began in August 1996 when I was involved in a serious car accident that took 10 months to recover from and during that time I really realize how false a reality society create for us as sacred beings. That our society today has done away with the sacred and replace it with money and greed and selfishness. And that really, really hit me because the wreck made me realize that, there was something lot more important a lot deeper for my life than just playing to the game of work, work and consume, consume.
So I went on a spiritual journey that I thought would take me around, but instead it brought me to the beautiful ancient Redwoods of Northern California. When I first entered these forest I fell to my knees and I began to cry, because of the power and the life force and spirituality that were held in these beautiful majestic cathedrals of the planet. Then a few weeks later I found out these forest were being turned in to clear-cuts and mud slides by Pacific Lumber Maxxam Corporation. And I knew I couldn't go around the world, I could not turn my back on what I seen and what I had found out because if I did; or I be as part of the destruction as Pacific Lumber Maxxam.
So I committed myself to doing whatever I possible could to help protect these forest. But I didn't realize that was going to be what is now become an over year and half long occupation of the tree known as Luna. People had placed a plat form in Luna branches because this 1000-year-old tree was marked to be destroyed. And it stands right next to a mudslide caused by the clear cutting practices of Pacific Lumber on this hillside. That mudslide destroyed 7 families' homes in the town of Stratford below and destroyed their lives. And it indicative how the destruction of our planet is destroying all life, whether you're an animal, human, planet or a tree. So activist using the light of the full moon in October as there guide assembled the plat form in Luna's branches which is how she got the name Luna.
And when I came out here looking to get involved with the forest. The only thing that was happening at that time, that people needed someone or willing or accepting of me was this tree sit. And so up into Luna branches I climb and I've been here since Dec. 10, 1997 doing what I can make the world aware and getting this tree protected.Dennis> That's Great.
