1950's and 60's Folk Revival Series

Saturday, January 31, February 7th and 14th, 2004

Does the mention of names like Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, the Travellers, the Kingston Trio and Josh White, bring back happy memories? Throughout the prosperous 1950's and 60's, North American folk music enjoyed a huge wave of popularity, that in many ways, rivaled the increasing popularity of psychadelic rock and roll and other mainstream genres that dominated the airwaves of major commercial stations. Revival period folk songs blended together a sound that was heavily rooted in history and tradition. When mixed together with modern instruments and lyrics that drew on wide ranging themes,(such as farm life, fantasy, American history and most particularly, the boiling issues of the day such as civil rights and labour battles), these songs attracted some of the largest audiences folk music had ever seen. To this day, folk music has failed to attract the kind of following it had in the 50's and 60's, despite the introduction of modern themes and sounds into the music.

This three show series will feature many of the well known and lesser known songs from this period, and will also include some Irish folk music from the Canadian group, the Irish Rovers and will delve into the slightly more contemporary folk-pop sound of singers like Buffy Sainte Marie.

If you like folk music of any kind, then surely you won't want to miss Much More Golden Years for the first three shows of 2004!

FOR THE FIRST TIME! Easy Listening and Easy Listening Jazz

Saturday, February 21, 2004

While I did one show on jazz (back in June on Re-Living the Golden Years), and have done a few easy listening songs by Nana Mouskouri (although some might consider her to be a pop singer), I have never gotten around to doing an entire show devoted to easy listening. On February 21, 2004, I will host a full two hours of easy listening style music, including easy listening clarinet jazz by Mr. Acker Bilk, and traditional easy listening music by British singer Roger Whittaker. For bonus, I'll include whatever other songs and artists that fit in this theme, whose music I can get my hands on. If this sounds intriguing to you, I encourage you to tune into Much More Golden Years for the third Saturday of February!
