ARTIFICIAL LIFE

Artificial Life is a field of study, which investigates the scientific, engineering, philosophical, and social aspects associated with our rapidly increasing technological ability to synthesize life-like behaviors in computers, machines, molecules, and many other alternative media. In real sense the study of artificial life gives us access to the domain of life-as-it-could-be. Included in the study of artificial life are the studies of the origin of life, self-assembly, growth and development, evolutionary and ecological dynamics, animal and robot behavior, social organization, and cultural evolution. The most concise definition can be - life as synthesized by man rather than by nature. The basic assumption about the study of this discipline is that life is not unique to its biological form, but is a more general property of the organization of matter. Artificial life explores life as it could be rather than life, as we know it to be.
