Okay, so who the heck is this person?
Diana Wynne Jones writes fantasy. Many will tell you that her
books are for children, but they are really for anyone who is
interested in hearing about their favorite stories and cliches
twisted into hilariously funny stories, or even people who want
to see a 'new' outlook in fantasy.
DWJ grew up in England and was moved many times in her
childhood due to the unpredicatbility of bomb raids by the
Nazis in WWII. Her neglected childhood and disorientation in
family as a child show in many of her books.
In college, DWJ attended lectures from both C.S. Lewis and
J.R.R. Tolkien. This may explain the parallels between her books
and theirs, although in reality almost all modern fantasy is
based on the works of those two authors.
Diana's books tend to focus on the power that weak people gain
with better communication. In addition, parody runs strongly
through nearly all her plots. Both lend to make a fresh and
exciting story.
I have chosen to divide the novels in my lists into two
categories: Ones that take place in a single reality or universe,
and ones that take place in more than one reality or universe.
These do admittedly cross over often, but I have tried my best to
keep it accurate.
