Highbanking |
The Highbanker or Power sluice is a sluice box with a hopper attached to a classifying screen that is made to separate the larger rocks from material to run in a sluice. The hopper is usually made of plastic and is pretty durable. The classifier is made of long steel rods that are spread about 1/2 inch apart, allowing material of roughly that size to enter the sluice. It is designed to wash away clay and stir up the material that a lot of the time is attached to GOLD. This is done by a high-pressure spray bar system that is mounted inside of the hopper. The high-pressure water pummels the material and breaks up any hard-pack material and clay that may hold GOLD! The high-pressure spray also assists in carrying the oversized rock away from the classifier screen. The sluice then operates just as it should in separating the gold from the lighter materials. It is generally used where access is difficult or dredging is not permitted. It only needs some type of water source, which could be several hundred feet away to function properly. A Highbanker can be converted to a dredge where this function is needed. SET UP The Highbanker come with a stand that should be set up in a way as to give the proper angle of ½ inch to ¾ inch per foot of sluice length. It should be set up as close as possible to the material pile that you are going to be running. Connect the water hose assembly and start the engine as per manufacturer instructions. Generally the water will almost fill the sluice. (See sluice set up) Operation Bring a shovel, a strong back, and be prepared to get wet. Simply shovel the material pile into the hopper as fast as the sluice will allow without loading up. Clean up as recommended. |
