The Day You Went Away
~A GW Songfic

-----------------------

	Well I wonder,
	Could it be,
	When I was dreaming 'bout you baby,
	You were dreaming of me?

* * * * *

In the dimly-lit bedroom of a small apartment on L2, a slender figure
lay curled up in the middle of a lonely bed, fitfully sleeping the sleep
of the damned. The young boy shivered and burrowed deeper into the
covers, seeking a warmth that had left, oh so long ago. Long, curling
lashes fluttered as he dreamed, a soft, sad sigh escaping his lips.

"Heero..."

* * * * *

	Call me crazy,
	Call me blind,
	To still be suffering is stupid after all of this time.

* * * * *

The full force of the dawning sun shone on the sleeping boy's face,
gradually pulling the reluctant dreamer out of sweet oblivion. Large
violet eyes slowly opened, their owner wearily sitting up and raking a
hand through his sleep-mussed chestnut hair. Sighing, the slim youth
stared out the window, silently watching the neighborhood rise to greet
the new morning. A young couple kissed goodbye on the steps across the
street, the smiling man giving his wife one last gentle caress before
leaving for work. He flinched at the sight, his fists clenching on the
covers, the knuckles slowly turning white from the strain. With a
muffled curse, he turned away, stumbling from his bed to the tiny
washroom outside. Trembling hands were thrust into the dented basin by
the sink, and he splashed his face with the frigid water inside, trying
to wash away the painful memories the tender scene had roused.

He couldn't believe that it could still HURT so much.

He lifted his head, catching a glimpse of his reflection in the bathroom
mirror. Was that pale, sad-eyed wraith of a boy truly him?

A tiny, self-derogatory grin quirked his lips.

"Duo no baka."

How pathetic could a guy get, ne?

* * * * *

	Did I lose my love to someone better?
	And does she love you like I do?
	I do, you know I really, really do.

* * * * *

He walked back into the bedroom, seating himself down at the dresser.
Picking up the framed clipping before him, he traced gentle fingers
along the faces of the smiling couple within. A salty drop splashed
onto the glass surface, then another, and another.

Why? Why did he have to go?

He stared at the caption, at the big, bold letters proclaiming the
marraige of Earth's Hero to the Queen of the World. A choking pain
burned in his chest.

He had loved him so much. More, he believed, than that princess ever
could.

So why had he left HIM for HER?

* * * * *

	Well, hey,
	So much I need to say,
	Been lonely since the day,
	The day you went away.
	So sad but true,
	For me there's only you.
	Been crying since the day,
	The day you went away.

* * * * *

The day he'd seen this picture with its accompanying article in the
newspaper, he'd wanted to storm up to her castle and demand some
answers. He'd even gone so far as to call him up, collect of course,
fully prepared to unleash a storm of ranting upon his head. One look at
his eyes though, so bright and so HAPPY, had deflated his righteous
anger like a pricked balloon. All he'd managed was a choked
'Congratulations', before he'd had to hang up, he was crying so hard.

He'd since tried to get over him, had gone on countless dates, but had
found no one to take his place. No one had even come close to filling
the empty place his heart had once been. To his everlasting horror,
he'd discovered that he was a one-man boy - Heero Yuy it was, and Heero
Yuy it would always be. He'd been ruined for anyone else.

* * * * *

	I remember, date and time,
	September twenty-second,
	Sunday, twenty-five after nine,

* * * * *

His eyes were drawn to the calendar on the wall, the page still
displaying the date 'September 22, AC 197', a silent testimonial to the
worst day of his life.

He remembered that awful day so vividly.

* * * * *

	In the doorway,
	With your case,
	No longer shouting at each other, there were tears on our faces.

* * * * *

He remembered screaming, pleading, BEGGING for Heero to listen to him,
asking him why, promising to change, promising him ANYTHING, as long as
he stayed, as long as he didn't leave him here alone. He remembered
seeing the single, regretful tear that had escaped Heero's iron control
before he'd turned his face away.

He remembered weeping like an abandoned child as he'd watched his only
love walk out the door.

* * * * *

	And we were letting go of something special,
	Something we'll never have again,
	I know, I guess I really, really know.

* * * * *

Everything had ended on that day. No matter how hard he'd tried to move
on with his life, there was always something missing. His friends had
tried to help, but he'd had to refuse their offers. Only one thing
could save him, and HE was snuggling with his pampered princess in their
perfect castle on Earth.

Bitter?  Him?  Naw.

* * * * *

	Well, hey,
	So much I need to say,
	Been lonely since the day,
	The day you went away.
	So sad but true,
	For me there's only you.
	Been crying since the day,
	The day you went away.

* * * * *

Damn it! He'd promised himself he wouldn't do this again. What was the
point of reliving that day over and over? It wouldn't change ANYTHING.
He was only making himself miserable, well, more miserable than normal.

He sighed, shoulders slumping defeatedly.

But he was so lonely.....

What happened to the happy, manic boy he had been?

* * * * *

	The day you went away.

* * * * *

* * * * *

	The day you went away.

* * * * *

* * * * *

	Did I lose my love to someone better?
	And does she love you like I do?
	I do, you know I really, really do.

* * * * *

He sobbed, burying his face in his hands.

* * * * *

	Well, hey,
	So much I need to say,
	Been lonely since the day,
	The day you went away.
	So sad but true,
	For me there's only you.
	Been crying since the day,
	The day you went away.

* * * * *

The frame fell unnoticed to the floor, the glass shattering into a
million pieces.

* * * * *

	Why do we never know what we've got 'til it's gone?
	How could I carry on,
	The day you went away?

* * * * *

* * * * *

	Cause I've been missing you so much I have to say,
	Been crying since the day,
	The day you went away.

* * * * *

* * * * *

	The day you went away.

* * * * *

In a bedroom on a small apartment in L2, a young boy sobbed in front of
an old dresser, broken pieces of glass surrounding him like the
shattered pieces of his heart.

* * * * *

	The day you went away.
