4What You See Is What You Get
--a GW songfic

----------------------------

	~You used to say that I was special
	 Everything was right~

* * * * *

Duo glumly sat before the mirror, lips uncharacteristically devoid of
his usual smile. The Deathscythe pilot simply stared silently at his
reflection, shoulders drooping with the sheer weight of his
unhappiness. A single tear trailed a glittering path down his cheek.

"Heero..."

Shadowed eyes stared back at him from a pale, pale face, hurt and
confusion roiling in their violet depths.

What in the world had gone wrong?

A sad sigh escaped his lips.

He, no, _they_, had both been so happy. Things had seemed so perfect.

Another tear escaped from his brimming eyes.

What had gone wrong?

* * * * *

	~But now you think I'm wearing too much makeup
	 And my dress is too tight~

* * * * *

Wide violet eyes roved over every inch of the boy in the mirror. Was
Heero right? Had he really changed so much?

The chestnut-haired boy shook his head violently.

Iya!  Chigau! (1)

(1) Basically means 'No! It's not true!'.

He was still the same Duo he'd always been, the same Duo Heero had
fallen in love with.

He hadn't changed at all.

That left him with only one unhappy conclusion.

* * * * *

	~You've got no reasons to be jealous
	 I've never been untrue~

* * * * *

Was Heero truly so unsure of him? He'd been trying so hard to make him
see just how much he loved him. Him, Heero, and nobody else.

* * * * *

	~So does it really matter if they're looking?
	 I'm only looking at you~

* * * * *

He'd never even _looked_ at another boy since he'd met the stoic
Japanese pilot. Never even considered accepting anyone else, and there
had been a _lot_ of offers.

Why couldn't Heero see that he had eyes for only _him_?

Damn you, Yuy.

* * * * *

	~You should never try to change me
	 I can be nobody else
	 And I like the way I am~

* * * * *

Eyes hardening into cold amethyst, Duo pushed away from the dresser and
headed for his closet.

He'd spent years trying to stay true to himself, trying not to let all
the shit life threw at him get him down. He would be _damned_ if he
would let Heero "I have a stick up my ass" Yuy destroy everything he'd
worked so hard to keep.

* * * * *

	~What you see is what you get
	 This is me
	 Hey you
	 If you want me don't forget
	 You should take me as I am
	 Cause I can promise you
	 Baby what you see is what you get~

* * * * *

With a particularly evil and determined glint in his eye, Duo reached
into the very back of his closet and drew out a pair of shiny black
leather pants, a black and silver mesh shirt and a small wooden box.

Heero couldn't seem to tell the difference between being friendly and
being deliberately provocative.

It was time to teach him the error of his ways.

No one walked over Duo Maxwell and got away with it.

No one.

* * * * *

	~I know you watch me when I'm dancing
	 When I party with my friends~

* * * * *

All eyes turned as a slender, sultry-eyed beauty entered the crowded
nightclub, walking with easy, predatory grace into the room. A
stunned, sexually-charged, silence followed in the newcomer's wake.

In a corner of the room, a tousled brown head jerked up, shocked eyes
focusing on the slim, scandalously-clad figure.

He was dressed in black and silver, this fallen angel, the colors
making his skin look almost dazzlingly white. His clothes covered him
like a second skin, leaving nothing of that luscious shape to the
imagination. Interested onlookers fervently thanked the short top he
was wearing, viewing the tantalizing display of the boy's taut abdomen,
and the intricate design that had been painted around his belly button,
with appreciative eyes. The boy's long, chestnut hair fell down his
back like a cloud of spun silk, the pulsing lights firing streaks of
red and gold in its depths. Kohl-rimmed eyes and pouty lips completed
the vision of loveliness.

Men and women alike cast admiring glances his way, the bolder ones
going so far as to caress his fine skin as he passed. The slim young
man ignored the lustful looks and skillfully avoided the groping hands.
Accompanied by a bronze-skinned Chinese youth, he gracefully made his
way onto the dance floor, hips swaying seductively. The two began to
move to the music, their lithe young bodies wrapping around each other
as they danced.

From that aforementioned corner, two cobalt eyes narrowed dangerously.

* * * * *

	~I can feel your eyes on my back baby~

* * * * *

Duo leaned closer to Wufei, lips lightly touching the other pilot's ear
as he whispered, "Heero's watching us."

Wufei's dark eyes twinkled with unholy glee. He too had had enough of
Heero's unreasonable jealousy concerning his longhaired friend. Duo
might be flighty, but faithless was something he was not. So when his
friend had charged into his room with his insane plan, Wufei had only
been too happy to agree.

It was, after all, only just.

Lips curving into a sensous smile, the Chinese boy purred. "Then let's
show him something to remember, ne?"

Duo smirked.  "Aa."

* * * * *

	~I can't have no chains around me
	 Baby can't you see?~

* * * * *

Heero's hands clenched tightly into fists, eyes never leaving the two
young men writhing on the dance floor.

What the hell were they both _thinking_?!?

He saw the Shenlong pilot's hands wandering down places they shouldn't
be, and saw red.

 (2)

(2) "Wufei, I'll kill you!!!"

* * * * *

Duo watched the fuming pilot from the corner of his eye. "Do you
think he's had enough, Wufei?"

Wufei lightly ran his hands down Duo's back, clinically observing
Heero's reactions. He saw the snarl that twisted the other boy's face
and hid a small smile of triumph.

"Aa.  Ninmu kanryou." (3)

(3) "Aa. Mission accomplished."

Duo's violet eyes glinted with determination. "Shall we go and draw
the curtains on this little performance then?"

Wufei nodded, then bent down and took Duo's mouth in a deep kiss.

* * * * *

Heero's eyes flared wide as he saw the dark-haired boy kiss _his_ Duo.

This was unforgiveable.

With a low growl, he sprang forward and ripped the two pilots apart.

* * * * *

	~I can be anything you dream of
	 But I gotta feel free~

* * * * *

Heero dragged Duo out into the alley, slamming the door on the widely
smirking Shenlong pilot he'd pushed aside. Whipping the violet-eyed
boy around, he raked a disgusted look at the other's outfit and ground
his teeth together.

"What the _hell_ do you think you're doing, Duo?!" he demanded, voice
rough with jealous rage.

Duo shook off his lover's hands, cooly leaning against the alley wall.
"I _was_ having a good time, Heero. What did you _think_ I was doing?"

Heero took a threatening step forward. "This isn't funny, Duo. What
the fuck kind of game are you playing at?"

"Game?" Duo lifted an elegant brow, not the least bit intimidated by
the Wing pilot's evident displeasure. "This isn't a game, Heero."

"_Duo_..." he growled.

The longhaired boy pushed himself off the wall, crossing his arms over
his chest. "I would think you'd be happy, Heero. After all," he
continued bitterly, "All this just confirms what you believe about me,
ne?"

Heero's eyes widened.  "What--"

Duo twirled around, almost dancing in the flickering light from the
corner street lamp, showing off his scantily-clad form. A mocking
smile graced his perfect face. "Don't you like it, Heero? Don't you
think that it's so me?" Violet eyes gleamed like fiery amethysts.

Heero shook his head like a maddened bull, confusion and anger warring
for dominance on his face. "You're not--I don't-"

"Oh?" The Deathscythe pilot leaned in, so close that the intoxicating
scent that was Duo began to overwhelm his senses. "I'm not?" Duo
cocked his head to one side, his hair spilling over one creamy
shoulder. "Demo, Heero," he whispered, his warm, sweet breath teasing
the other boy's ear. "I'm only living up to your expectations of me."
He trailed a finger down Heero's cheek.

"Aren't you happy, Hee-koi?"

* * * * *

	~You should never try to change me
	 I can be nobody else
	 And I like the way I am~

* * * * *

The perfect soldier stood stock still, face pale, feeling as though the
situation had gone dangerously out of control.

"I'm not." Duo lips twisted into a mocking parody of his usual grin.
"None of this is making me happy at all." He stepped away, flipping
his hair back over his shoulders. "I can't take this anymore, Heero."

"Duo, I-"

"You...it's always _you_, isn't it, Heero?" Duo turned around and
pressed his forehead against the wall, savoring the feel of the cool
brick against his heated skin. "Ne, tell me, Heero..." Weary violet
eyes peered at the Japanese pilot from beneath long lashes. "Did you
ever really trust me?"

* * * * *

	~What you see is what you get
	 This is me
	 Hey you
	 If you want me don't forget
	 You should take me as I am
	 Cause I can promise you
	 Baby what you see is what you get~

* * * * *

"Of course I trust you!" The Wing pilot burst out, sounding highly
offended.  "You're my partner!"

Duo gave him a long look. "I'm not talking about the trust that lies
between two soldiers, Heero." He sighed, tipping his head back to look
at the stars. "As a lover...as a friend...did you ever really trust
_me_?"

The dark-haired boy looked troubled. "I trust you."

"Oh, really?" Duo gave him a disbelieving stare. "Then why were you so
quick to think the worst of us back there? Oh yes," he added, when
Heero started. "Wufei and I knew you were watching. We saw you the
moment we came in."

"Then-"

"Why?" Duo finished the other boy's question. "To prove a point,
Heero."

* * * * *

	~You should never try to change me
	 I can be nobody else~

* * * * *

"No relationship can last unless it has a solid foundation of trust.
And you've just proved to me that you don't trust me at all."

Heero looked stunned.  "Duo..."

"You said you loved me, Heero. 'Aishiteru, Duo', that was what you
told me." Duo's voice sounded wistful. "Were you lying?"

"Chigau!" Heero shook off his shock and stalked forward, spinning the
smaller boy around and pulling him to his chest. "Uso ja nai! (4) I
meant it when I said that."

(4) "It wasn't a lie!"

"Did you really?" Duo asked in a hopeless little voice.

* * * * *

	~Believe me
	 You'll be looking for trouble
	 If you hurt me
	 I can promise you
	 You'll be looking for trouble
	 Believe me~

* * * * *

Heero's arms tightened around the other pilot. He could feel Duo
slowly slipping away from him like sand running between his fingers.
"What do you _want_ me to say, Duo? Gods, I've told you I loved you.
Why isn't that enough?" he asked with some desperation.

"Love without trust is like a mobile doll, Heero," Duo whispered in a
sad voice. "Empty and lifeless, and totally without meaning."

Heero swallowed hard, a painful knot constricting his throat. "Then
tell me what to _do_, Duo." His voice cracked. "I don't want to lose
you."

Duo pulled away from Heero and took a small step back, straightening
his shoulders until he was standing proudly before the Wing pilot.

"I want you to take a good look at me, Heero."

* * * * *

	~What you see is what you get
	 This is me
	 Hey you
	 If you want me don't forget
	 You should take me as I am
	 Cause I can promise you
	 Baby what you see is what you get~

* * * * *

"This is who I am, Heero. Duo Maxwell, he runs, he hides, but he never
lies." His mouth quirked up as he uttered his customary spiel. "This
is the boy you said you fell in love with, braid, loud mouth and all."
He pushed his bangs out of his face, fingers playing idly with the
chestnut strands.

"So why do you keep on trying to change me?"

* * * * *

Heero staggered back, eyes gone round in his pale face. Had he really
been doing that to Duo? He stared deep into those sad purple eyes and
could find nothing to contradict his lover's words. Oh, _gods_, how
could he have been so _stupid_?!? He'd been so insecure about their
relationship, so afraid that Duo would wake up from whatever spell had
made him choose a worthless soldier like Heero over the throng of
admirers he'd had, that he'd inadvertently been destroying the very
thing he'd wanted so badly to protect.

His hands clenched into fists.

Guilt and comprehension dawning in his horrified blue eyes, Heero
stood numbly before his Shinigami, waiting for the ax to fall, and
knowing he deserved whatever punishment Duo should choose to send his
way.

* * * * *

"Heero," Duo finally said, breaking the taut silence that had enveloped
the two youths like a shroud. "All I want from you is to accept me as
I am. Is that so much to ask?" He shrugged, a listless little
gesture belying his weariness at the situation. "Accept me as _me_,
Heero. Someone to be trusted, someone who keeps his promises, someone
who believes in a forever kind of love. If you can't do that, then
_please_--

"Just walk away."

His voice dropped to an aching whisper.

"I can't handle this anymore. I _won't_ give myself up for anyone,
Heero, not even for you."

* * * * *

"Duo..." Heero whispered wonderingly. His heart rose with a sudden,
burgeoning hope. Duo was -- he was giving him another chance!

Silently vowing not to blow this opportunity, he stumbled forward and
swept the longhaired boy into his arms.

"Gomen nasai, Duo. (5) I-", he clenched his eyes shut and held the
other boy tighter, burying his face in Duo's hair and breathing in its
sweet scent. "Aishiteru, Duo. Zutto, aishiteru." (6)

(5) "I'm sorry, Duo..."
(6) "I love you, Duo. I'll love you forever."

"Heero..."

"I can't tell you that I won't ever feel jealous over you, Duo, demo--"
he took Duo's elfin face between his own rough hands. "I promise I
won't take it out on you."

"Honto ni?" (7) Duo's lips trembled.

(7) "Really?"

"Aa." He gave him a shaky smile, trying to let all of his sincerity
show as Duo gave him a long, uncertain look. He nearly shouted in
relief when his lover finally wrapped his own arms around the blue-eyed
pilot and hugged him back.

"Aishiteru, Heero." Duo whispered, voice muffled against his shirt.

"Aishiteru, Duo. Thank you for not giving up on me." He moved his
hands down to clasp Duo's own. "Ne, Duo?"

"Hm?"

"Would you like to dance?"

The smaller pilot gave him a startled look, then slowly began to smile.

"I'd like that."

Hand in hand, the two young pilots made their way back into the
nightclub.

* * * * *

	~Cause I can promise you
	 Baby what you see is what you get~

* * * * *

Wufei's eyes gleamed with fond amusement as he watched his friends
dance. With one last backward glance, the Chinese youth quietly began
making his way home.

"Hn.  Ninmu kanryou."
