History
In the beginning ........
The Golf Weekend as we know it started from very humble beginnings, a group of work colleagues some of whom had just started golf decided that a weekend break for boys was in order. This was way back in 1992. Trevor initiated this idea and with the support of 7 others organised the very
first Golf Weekend.
Like most things the original style and format are very different to how they are today, the weekend has taken shape over a number of years. In this very first year the eight players chipped in and paid for the modification of a number of old football trophies, I said it was humble beginnings. The very first year there was no brochure, certainly no website, if fact very little was organised. As for competition we kept it very simple, Stableford point scoring system (pretty standard), however we did introduce the concept of seeds and non-seeds. This was borne out of necessity as some of the original eight had handicaps and some didn’t. From memory I think Trevor and I were both
playing off 26,
how times have changed !!
In this very first year we were very keen (golf wise at least) as we signed up for a full 4 rounds of golf, 1 on Friday, 2 on Saturday, with the final game on Sunday, and all matches were played in pairs with a seed and non-seed. The theory being that every non-seed got to play with every seed. Of course we needed an overall winner, so individual Stableford was used as the method of producing our overall winner, someone had to take this new
(modified)
trophy home.
The very first Golf Weekend was also very formal, jackets and ties were order of the day for dinner, and like good old boys we stayed at the clubhouse after the meal, no up town adventures as in the modern day Golf Weekend. It was also the birth of the Golf Weekend practical joke something Trevor started, has continued, and has mastered
with it now being a fine art.
This is how it all started, over the years many players have come and gone, all the richer for joining this merry group. From the initial group of 8 we quickly grew to 10 then to 12 and on to 16 as the word spread that this was a great golfing weekend, something a bit different from the norm. At 16 however the core organising group Condo, Mort and Ibbo decided that it was getting unmanageable so 12 was
adopted as the Golfing Weekend
optimum.
Since 1998 when this was introduced the Golf Weekend has gone from strength to strength, a core group of members has formed which enjoy the sport, before any ‘pop’ is consumed, the competition, the nightlife and the pure
enjoyment that this
annual
weekend brings.
Long
may this continue ...........
