2003, yet another resounding success, both the venue, the intense rivalry between the kids and the old timers, and the off course frivolities added up to another enjoyable weekend for all. Worsley Park provided the setting, an old converted farmhouse with all the facilities we have come to expect. Andy & Trevor had once again delivered a premium location/facility at an affordable price (courtesy of www.golfbreaks.com ), and of course QPR, Southampton and Middlesborough football clubs can't all be wrong. The food for me was also one of the highlights, good food, well prepared and presented, the only let down was the head waiter, the attempted charge for some stale bread took the edge off a great meal.
The Worsley Park course was a nice blend of new and old, the course being no more than 4 years old had obviously, when built, taken advantage of the natural landscaping. This had been used to the courses advantage not the players. There were plenty of individual holes where inaccuracy was punished, and a few easier shorter holes with little or no danger. The course also protected itself by a multitude of bunkers, I can vouch for how it effects your score because I played out of most of them and in my last game Emmo certainly enjoyed making sand castles on almost every hole ! The weather also played it's part over the weekend, we saw light and heavy showers, plenty of sunshine and an ever changing wind direction. I think of the 18 holes only 3 were with the wind, this made the course a lot longer that the card suggested.
On the competition front the Ryder Cup style event was fiercely contested, the Kids once again took the honours, with a massive score of 13.5 to 4.5, however this didn't tell the full story as many games went to the wire. On the individual front there was a new force in the group. Marky Mark had been on a strict diet of golf over the weeks prior to the golf weekend and this extra effort and expense paid dividends as he pushed for the win for most of the weekend. To his credit he gained 2nd place and pushed Big Wez to the end, a great effort from one of the usual golf weekend also rans.
The golf weekend also had a new participant 'Dale', a man that delivered probably one of the funniest jokes we as a group had heard. He also had one of the longest tongue twisting stories I have ever heard 'Rindecella', how he did that after a couple of beers will be one of life's little mysteries. The only thing 'Dale' did forget was his shirts, at least he had something ironed on his return home !
