Born in Boonville, Missouri (pop. 1200) on February 5, 1971, Evans grew up on a tobacco farm and started singing at age four in a family bluegrass band. To earn extra money for the family, Sara fronted a band with her brothers as she matured and her talent became apparent. The boys backed her up on guitar, bass and banjo.

They moved to Oregon shortly after and formed a band Sara Evans & North Santiam, in which Craig sang and played guitar. The group experienced regional success and opened for such acts as Willie Nelson, Clay Walker and Tim McGraw. The couple moved back to Nashville in 1995. In 2002, Craig is running for Congress in Oregon, where he and Sara have a second home.

Children: Son, Avery Jack Lyons Schelski, born August 21, 1999.
