Martin's Chair
Martin bought two things with him when he moved into Frasier's apartment. One of those things was Eddie. The other was Martin's barcalounger. It has green and brown stripes and Frasier thinks it is one of the ugliest chairs in the world. It defiantly does not fit in with his elegant, stylish furniture. However, it came, it stayed.
According to Roy Christopher, the set designer, when the writers wanted a dowdy old chair, he headed straight for the thrift shop. Surprisingly, he struck out.
"We just couldn't find a chair that was ugly enough," he says. So he took a new chair, upholstered it with the worst fabric he could find, sandpapered it for instant ageing and applied duct tape over imaginary rips. The result is Martin's "La-Z Guy" barcalounger.
There are many reasons why Martin loves his chair. It was the chair he sat in when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Moon. It was the chair he sat in when the USA beat the USSR at hockey during the 1980 Olympic Games. It was the chair he sat in when Frasier rang to tell him he had a grandson. And most of all, it's the chair he used to fall asleep in. Hester would then wake him up with kisses. Sometimes he still expects her to be there when he wakes up. To Frasier it's just a chair, but to Martin it's part of his life.
Understandably, Martin lets the boys move his chair into his room when they have important wine club meetings, as long as they put it back afterwards. Once they did this, but Niles, who was not used to lifting anything heavy, dropped it causing a scratch on the floor. The result? Loads of handymen in Frasier's apartment just hours before he was due to host a meeting.
Martin never usually lets anyone else sit in his chair, but when Sam Malone came to visit and Martin found out he was a baseball star, he let Sam sit in his chair.
Martin's chair was destroyed on the 8th anniversary of the day he (and it) moved in with Frasier, as it caught fire. Frasier managed to get his father a chair which looks identical. As this chair isn't made anymore, Frasier had to get it especially made, and it was then the most expensive piece of furniture in the apartment.
When Martin married Ronee in the final episode, he moved out of the apartment and took the Chair with him. After 11 years, Frasier found out that he did miss it (and his father, naturally!) after all, and the apartment just wasn't the same without them.
