Now, I'm sure none of this is true, but these are the rumors that
Magdalene has heard.
In the city of Treviso, upon an infant's first birthday, a collection
of objects is spread on a cloth before him to determine his future: a
hammer for a blacksmith, coins for a banker, a rosary for a priest, et cetera. It seems that young Giacomo, dissatisfied with the assemblage before him, toddled to the nearest gentleman in the room and, once the man had bent
down to the child in curiosity, actually gripped the handle of his sword and
drew it from the scabbard.
There is also a story that, though educated in gentlemanly graces at court, he was encouraged to leave after several other gentlemen's sons prone to arguing with his lordship showed up with odd contusions about the forehead, leaving the skin for a day embossed with the letter "G." It is believed that Giacomo was first drawn to Spain, and took up a position with the house di Cellini, due to the Spanish importation of coffee beans from the New World.
