Jamie is Scottish and is expressly forbidden from wearing a kilt while climbing the rigging.
He apparently wandered on board when the White Star visited Scotland. No one realized he wasn't a hired hand until we had put to sea, at which time he was given a choice: walk home, or get to work.
Jamie spent so much time as a powder monkey that the job became second nature to him. At which point the Captain promoted him and put him in charge of training all the new powder monkeys that came aboard.
